With the mountain stages behind us, 5 pan flat stages are left. So GC wise it will be hard to change something.
But lots of points are still to grab and so the fight for the point ranking and also for the remaining stage wins is wide open.
6 riders in todays breakaway and so the biggest in this race so far.
Many riders are far behind in the GC and hope to be allowed to get one win.
Chavanel
Orbe
Chernetskiy
Lang
Alafaci
Guozhang
The big sprinter teams of Meyer, Forero and Vingerling are chasing. So all but ONCE for 2 times stage winner Guillen. Additional Siam Cement for race leader Rodrigues. So it`s not looking too good for the group.
No interest at all to get the sprint points. Orbe ahead of Chavanel and Chernetskiy. But they have only one focus: The stage win.
Siam is going around the yellow jersey to avoid any crashes. Meanwhile also ONCE at the front. So 4 sprinter teams of at least 2 riders against the breakaway.
120km and 6'50 gap and going backwards again.
Chernetskiy taking the first two KoM sprints with Lang, Orbe and Chavanel taking small points.
Also the last KoM goes to Chernetskiy as only interested rider. So up to 8th in that ranking with 18 points in total. 12 points behind Losada.
45km left and Fletcher Garneau with 5 riders in front. They really want the next win for Meyer.
Also it might be to distance some other sprinters as the wind comes up fast now and splits could happen.
We reach the 20km mark and now the wind really blows from the side.
With only 4km to go the breakaway is caught while a group of 24 is dropped. No GC riders though and with the wind being less strong at the moment it`s looking safe for those.
Catching the breakaway that late made a real positioning difficult. So it`s ONCE with the leading train ahead of the Fletcher train. Next it`s the train for Forero with Richeze disturbing a bit, while Vingerling is still quite a bit behind.
Herrada Cano Guillen Awang Haller Rodriguez Parra Vanderaerden Richeze Meyer Arango Forero Dall'Antonia Opie Manarelli Stenuit Eefting Gajek Vingerling
1,8km and Cano starts the sprint with Guillen opening a gap to Awang and the rest.
Vanderaerden coming on the left now with Meyer behind him.
On the right Forero still behind Arango.
Others like Opie, Manarelli, Dall'Antonia still behind those.
Vingerling really struggling to position today. Still quite far behind and not very fast actually.
But back to the fight for the win.
Guillen taking his 3rd win? Behind him Awang looking strong while Vanderaerden looks the stronger Fletcher rider. Those three look like the best bets right now.
Behind Meyer, Forero, Opie, Dall'Antonia and Manarelli the fastest.
300m and Guillen can`t keep the lead. Malaysian Awang too fast for him and eventually taking a rare Malaysian stage win?
Or is Vanderaerden still coming from behind?
No. It`s indeed Awang taking the first win for Sauber in his home race. Great win for him ahead of Guillen.
Then Vanderaerden and his team mate Meyer, who look like the strongest duo but often seem to miscalculate their sprint.
Forero as 5th still not with his best performance while Opie and Dall'Antonia might be happy as next.
Manarelli as 8th ahead of a strong Gajek today. Richeze to round up the top10.
Vingerling as 11th disappointing today.
