After the first of two mountain stages, the 4th day offers another chance for the sprinters. It`s as pan flat as possible and so no KoM points are given today.
So far Guillen and Meyer were able to take a win each while Vingerling is still waiting for his first win after being 2nd in both sprint stages so far.
Also Forero and Manarelli are still waiting for a win next to the long list of more sprinters.
4 riders with a small gap to the peloton passing the first of three sprints:
Salleh
Cummings
Verona
Sanikwathi
As nobody seems to be interested, this is also the order here. And as the peloton is happy with those they allow them to extend the gap.
Euskaltel leader Fernandez punctures early in the race and so he has no problem to make it back. Interesting though that nobody did wait for him.
85km left and with a gap close to 5min the sprinter teams take over.
ONCE and Fletcher including their leadouts Cano and Haller, TomTom with Stenuit and Alpina are the four teams starting to reduce the gap.
2nd sprint and still their only interest is the stage win as Verona leads the group over the line.
With 73km to go though they have lost ~40s over the last 10km and so the peloton is looking confident.
Last sprint with 23km to go. Salleh takes it but the gap is down to 1'20.
Having a very windy day, some teams accelerate trying to create echelons. So Fletcher Garneau is mainly responsible for it as they also send Vanderaerden to the front to work for Meyer.
So far though only tier 2 sprinters at the end of the peloton and only helpers being dropped.
With only 3,7km to go the breakaway is caught and sprint trains are formed.
Haller Stenuit Vanderaerden Eefting Meyer Vingerling Rodriguez Parra Manarelli Arango Gajek Forero Herrero Guillen- Dall'Antonia Richeze Opie Clavero Djurdiic Cano- Sinner
Cano somehow manages to come to the front to support Guillen.
That said the ONCE and Alpina train look like a mess mixing together a lot while the two side trains look much more organized.
Eefting with a good leadout bringing Vingerling into a very good position and behind them also Cano is able to position Guillen nicely.
Meyer and Manarelli trying to get Guillen`s wheel while Vanderaerden totally changed sides being on his own now next to the Alpina train, where Forero is a gap behind Arango.
Flamme Rouge and the TomTom and ONCE trains work perfectly.
Vanderaerden next ahead of Meyer again with Forero still strugglin to follow Arango. Also Manarelli lost Meyer`s wheel a bit.
Cano is dropping back and Guillen, Vingerling and Vanderaerden look the strongest behind Eefting still leading out.
Meyer, Manarelli and Forero next with Opie, Dall'Antionia, Awang, Clavero and Richeze all fighting for the last top10 spots.
Vanderaerden goes into the lead which is a really strong performance by him after working over the stage a bit.
Meyer though coming fast on the side as also Guillen and Vingerling.
Forero, Manarelli and Opie also fast.
Close finish today but in the end it`s Guillen taking his 2nd win after the opening stage.
Vanderaerden wins the team duel against Meyer. But with both on the podium it`s a nice team result. That said a better communication could have delivered them a win.
Vingerling as 4th still being very consistent ahead of Forero, who always struggles a bit in the positioning.
Opie as 6th today ahead of Manarelli, Awang and Clavero with Eefting still as 10th.
No GC changes but tomorrows queen stage is expected to change a bit again.
