Le Tour de Langkawi - stage 5
Smowz
img31.imageshack.us/img31/7412/parcoursy.jpg

The Genting Highlands climb is one of the highlights of the climbing calendar and this year the riders have had a tough run in.

We are left with an intriguing GC battle with Ferrari on excellent form setting up
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Gianpaolo Caruso
for a stage win on the Cameron Highlands stage yesterday and he now has 12 seconds on stage 3 winner
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Marco Marzano
and Red Bull's threat
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png John Gadret

These three seem to be the most animated but Pirelli will expect something from big transfer signing
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Carlos Castaño
whilst young American

Venezualan
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Wilmer Vasquez
and Hollister's
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Sylwester Szmyd
are listed as outsiders for today.

The climb averages out at 7% and lasts for 22.3km, it looks like it will be a case of timing your attack to perfection.

The early sprints are hoovered up by breakaway attempters with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Jaco Venter
getting in on the act at the first ahead of two of the real young talents to emerge from this race
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Ole Hirschlein
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Nairo Quintana

img195.imageshack.us/img195/8531/1spr1.jpg

We are still in the break and chase stage of the race but Hirschlein is still up there in second and the next sprint with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Egoitz Murgoitio
ahead of
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Lars Tommersen
in third.

img689.imageshack.us/img689/8639/2spr2.jpg

By now we do have a break with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Bernardo Colex
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Kin-San Wu
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Jaco Venter
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Joe Hicks
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Klaas Vantornout
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Chen Shikai
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Sergei Lagutin
joining the three already named.

As we have expected Meiji Fuji have names up here and get their sprint win in the final on the road prime with Skikai taking it ahead of Vantornout and Murgoitio.

img805.imageshack.us/img805/2689/3spr3.jpg

With Pirelli and Red Bull having placed a useful climbers in the breakaway it's up to VolksWagen to put pressure on Ferrari in the lead up to the climb.

img194.imageshack.us/img194/5963/4vwhammer.jpg

It means our break start the 23km climb with just under three minutes lead, not really enough you would have thought.

img705.imageshack.us/img705/5682/5breakonclimb.jpg

VolksWagen don't really have a big climbing team and soon yield to the powerful Ferrari men who take complete control of the pack.

img193.imageshack.us/img193/4595/6ferrariincompletecontr.jpg

They quickly reduce the pack to 34 riders and it is going to get thinner from here with the likes of
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Massimiliano Maisto
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Moris Possoni
doing huge turns on the front.

img255.imageshack.us/img255/6271/7determinedeffortfromit.jpg

However as the break comes into view the attacks do still start and the trigger happy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Christophe Kern
is the first to go on the move with 12km to go.

img27.imageshack.us/img27/7725/8kernisfirstrealattacke.jpg

This succeeds in pulling the break back and as the Ferrari's pull things together a few more names drop off the back such as Bianchi pair
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Koldo Gil
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Andreas Matzbacher

img695.imageshack.us/img695/1327/9gilamongstthosedropped.jpg

Ferrari have also lost most of their pacers and as we get into the last 6km it falls to
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Marco Osella
to do the super domestique role as
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Marco Marzano
tries to prize open a little gap.

img819.imageshack.us/img819/2963/10marzanolooksdangerous.jpg

He does suceed in getting us a select 12 man group into the last 4 klicks the names of the survivors.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Agudelo and Vasquez
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Peter Stetina
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Caruso, Osella
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Sylwester Szmyd
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Gadret, Moreno

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Marco Marzano

It's Stetina who decides to roll the dice out of the dirty dozen
img839.imageshack.us/img839/9135/11stetinalooksforit.jpg

At 1.47 back he is given some rope too.

img23.imageshack.us/img23/4279/12americanisgivensomele.jpg

Or maybe others cannot follow... it is a strong move into now the last 3 kilometres. Four riders are able to bridge.

img26.imageshack.us/img26/5189/13fourridersleapaway.jpg

It's Caruso, Gadret, Castano and Marzano the expected four really.

img262.imageshack.us/img262/59/14wehavefiveoftehstrong.jpg

The question is will anyone show any weakness as we go to the line...

Caruso...

img27.imageshack.us/img27/9608/15carusodropsback.jpg

It seems more of a lapse of concentration rather than true weakness as he suddenly finds a second wind, but Marzano is looking to take advantage.

img11.imageshack.us/img11/9305/salapseinconcentration.jpg

Caruso nips past Stetina, Castano and Gadret but it's too late to stop Marzano.

img8.imageshack.us/img8/1318/17hemovespastgadretbutm.jpg

It's a another Italian stage win here in Langkawi, Caruso has done enough to save his yellow jersey.

Wait a moment an official is pictured holding a stopwatch, lets look at the overhead.

img713.imageshack.us/img713/4126/18stopwatchesout.jpg

Eight seconds has been recorded between first and second. Marzano then takes the lead by four seconds. Caruso bangs his handlebars in frustration! His teammate Osella leads Schwab, Moreno and Kern behind 45 seconds back restricting the gains for young Stetina.

img97.imageshack.us/img97/2467/19osellaleadsrest.jpg

Marzano then takes a second win and moves into the race/points lead now holding the King of the Mountains jointly with Caruso. Gadret and Moreno hold top five places for Red Bull who also have a commanding Team lead with Stetina by some way the best youngster.
