The day before the Cameron and Genting double header and this one should not be undersestimated. Indeed speculation is that this could give us a fair GC shake up with the big guns
Carlos Castaño
John Gadret
Gianpaolo Caruso
Koldo Gil
and
Marco Marzano
listed as the favourites for todays hilly one with a fairly tough mountain in.
We get a fair bit of interest in an early breakaway and things eventually settle down into being a nine man break.
Ole Hirschlein
Ben King
Staf Scheirlinckx
Amaël Moinard
Sergei Lagutin
Aaron Gate
John Degenkolb
Andreas Matzbacher
Nairo Quintana
make up a breakaway made up of some half decent climbers it must be said. Having missed out Koppert with little chance of overall honours realise they better get a man up there as
Lieuwe Westra
tries to get up before the main climbing.
But today's fairly lumpy all day and he has trouble getting on as the break battles for the first sprint Moinard takes it ahead of Metzbacjer and Herschlan.
Westra is not going to make it across so when Proximus (another team realising they better attack now really) try to get decent climber
Johan Coenen
across young Aussie
Jay McCarthy
goes with.
At the second sprint Meiji Fuji take their obligatory sprint a day through Lagutin ahead of the onimous looking Moinard and Hirschlan is third again.
The pack have this pegged at five minutes with 90km to go as we enter the big mountain climb a real hors d'ouevres for the next two days.
Pirelli racing for Spanish dangerman Castano go to the front and put a lot of sprinters out the back door early on.
The climb splits up the break too with Gate, Scheirlinckx, King and Degonkolb losing contact.
They are joined fairly soon by Coenan and McCarthy who are trying hard to bridge to our leaders.
The pace really is quite high behind them though with the pack (if it can still be described as such) dwindling dropping the yellow jersey and yesterdays stage winner
Tiziano Dall'Antonia
The big guns amass at the front including French champion John Gadret, Spanish champion Koldo Gil and Italian champion Gianpaolo Caruso. They are wise as their group now just numbers 27 riders.
They are not going to catch our leaders and it is Moinard who takes the big 16 points for this tough climb ahead of Lagutin and Hirshclan.
It was a tough one today and a double check on the chasing group see's just 18 men left in the favourites. Just five men plus the two Coenan and McCarthy ahead of them here.
The 18 left then are:
Jeanneson, Stetina
Degenkolb, Kern
Gadret, Moreno
Caruso, Osella, Possoni
Gil, Schwab
Szmyd, Scheirlinckx
Agudelo, Vasquez
Carlos Castaño
Marco Marzano
Aaron Gate
Having lost contact near the top seven men look determined to chase back on this descent led by Oz Cycling.
Indeed
George Bennett
Michael Vink
Georg Preidler
Yonathan Monsalve
Klaas Vantornout
Ben King
and
Sergio Ortega
get back
This forms a group of 25 riders now and with 30km to go they are 1.32 back on the lead five and 53 second behind the two chasers (Coenan and McCarthy).
The leaders go through the final sprint Lagutin again taking it ahead if Moinard and this time Matzbaher gets third. Lagutin and Moinard could move high up on GC if they can stay away here.
The lead five also get to contest the KoM prime just a six pointer this time, but Moinard really puts his stamp on that competition by taking the prime ahead of Quintana and Lagutin.
Lagutin finds this climb a little steep and drops back with Matzbacher and Hirschlan, leaving us with just two clear Quintana and Moinard.
However the Ferrari look hungry for a stage win once more with yesterdays winner Dall Antonia way back they now look to set it up for one of their climbers.
Sure enough as soon as Quintana and Moinard are reeled in it is Italian champion
Gianpaolo Caruso
who attacks on the final climb.
Two men are trying to get on the Ferrari mans wheel, fellow Italian
Marco Marzano
and French champ
John Gadret
Caruso looks around and loses a bit of momentum as the crafty Marzono nips past into the final kilometre.
It proves the decisive more as he hold off a fighting back Caruso and Gadret for the win and the GC lead.
Behind several riders are dropped in this final acceleraton but Castano managed to avoid a time loss other than time bonuses to come in 4th just ahead of Spanish champion Gil, breakaway man Moinard, Schwab, Szmyd and Moreno.
Kern, Stetina, Possoni, Osella and Jeannesson come in next losing just over a minute.
BIg GC mix up today with Marzano moving into the lead ahead of new points and mountains leader Moinard and key rival Caruso.
