Here we go!
Its the eagerly anticipated mountain stage - and many riders are keen to make an impact. Between 20-30 riders try to go clear and eventually it is a large group of 15 that gets a gap
Brandt, Docker, Rabou, Tendero, Scanlon, Vitor, Doi, Jeannesson, Diaz Corrales, Txurruka, Boonratanathanakorn, Mori, Van Emden, Passalacqua, and Haidar Anuawar.
Txurruka, Doi and Brandt each one one of the days 3 intermediate sprints.
But the story of the stage isnt the break, their gap was always pegged and isnt much as we started the climb with 28km to go
Dupont attempts to bridge across the gap
But its not worth the effort and with 22km to go we are all back together
With Carrara and Lloret setting tempo a lot of riders are dropping off the back. This includes race leader Paride Grillo - but this time none of the Sony Ericsson climbers have dropped back to help him
Jaramillo is also on the front as we reach the lull before the storm, a short descent before the road goes vertical again. 15km to go and already the group is down to 36 men
Go! Go! Go! Ardila Cano is off
Pedraza, Dupont and Kiserlovski follow but Lloret is having none of it and closes the gap
Another batch of attacks - its Seeldraeyers, Stetina and Noval
American champion Tom Danielson takes a look at his rivals before following the move
Stetina is in the lead as Danielson bridges up to make it 4 men
Its All American at the moment as Raisin attacks
Pedraza goes and at last, Cadel Evans - while up front the pace of Danielson has proved too much for Seeldraeyers
Vasquez continues the run of attacks - and Danielson is now leading solo!
Cheered on by support, Tom Danielson is looking to continue on from last season with a strong showing when it matters
As the gap extends, Stetina puts in another dig to see what he can do
Evans links up with him, perhaps together they can catch Danielson
A group of 10 - Ardila Cano, Raisin, Basso, Pedraza, Fernandez Oliveira, Noval, Landaluze, Vasquez, Seeldraeyers and Martinez - are chasing, with another 15 not too far behind them.
Evans has now moved away from Stetina as he climbs towards Danielson, we have 2 national champions in the lead
Stetina is slipping back to the chasing 10 but just as they are set to make contact he attacks again!
Back up to the front though as Danielson enters the final kilometre
A brilliant victory for the American!
Cadel Evans is nearly a minute behind in 2nd
And Stetina is in the end a comfortable and deserved 3rd
Pedraza takes 4th, leading in the group of 10 chasers.
