The hilly stage is the only real chance to gain time on a stage other than the big mountain stage 5.
10 riders went on the attack but only 4 could stay clear
Murgoitio, Goss, Napolitano and Steurs
6 more riders would try to bridge across. Only Shpilevski got close to linking up but lost ground once the intermediate sprint came around
Goss beat Napolitano for the first 2 but despite getting the jump again for the 3rd, Napolitano came through to take it
Onto the climbs and Steurs took the pts on the first one as Goss ended his relay right before the top
Steurs took the 2nd one aswell, as they dropped Murgoitio
Now the trio's attention towards survival and stage glory
Particularly so for Steurs. He leaves the sprinters behind with 29km to go
Perhaps Steurs can make it, he has no threat on GC
But Olympus are chasing with Carrara, Lloret and Gasparotto - plus help from Starbucks
It still 50 seconds with 7km to go, and the chase is hindered as Lloret goes down in a crash - aswell as 6 others Ghyllebert, Quinziato, Mori, Rabou, Eastman and Peterson
30 seconds with 4km to go and what? Cadel Evans has attacked!
And he has caught Steurs with 2.3km to go
It looks good for the Australian, but Ivan Basso is giving chase
And Basso is closing!
They go side by side
And Basso wins!
Steurs took 3rd just ahead of Adam Hansen. If not for Evans' attack, he would have clung on to win
