Tour d'Azerbaijan - Stage 3

167km from Qabala back to Qabala, featuring a hilltop-finish, which may be crucial for the GC: the only hilly rated stage here looks like it won't just suit puncheurs, but also climbers. We will see..

Rodrigues soloed to an impressive victory yesterday and given the competition (as for skills on hills), he should be expected to be amongst the strongest today. There's no truly outstanding puncheur amongst the most serious GC-contenders.

i.imgur.com/yyOsecS.jpg

One of the strongest puncheurs in the field though is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter, who makes it into the break of the day! Sauber apparently playing it's cards early, with Alizadeh or Saggiarota as their two most promising GC-threats still to show something here.

Schurter is accompanied by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Chamorro, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Partridge and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Lammertink!

Schurter (+ 1.35) and Chamorro (+ 1.42) as the best-placed in GC, so definitely a group, that needs to closely watched.

i.imgur.com/r3lmrzg.jpg

Let's jump straight into the final 45km of this stage: Chamorro/Schurter go for both intermediate sprints and finally drop their two breakaway companions with one of those sprints!

The duo looks indeed quite promising now, as they still hold on to a 4-minutes-gap at this point..

i.imgur.com/VCkvif0.jpg

Siam, Live Nation and ONCE are those teams, trying to narrow the gap:

17km to go and the peloton in danger to lose this stage to the leading duo, which maintains a 2'55"-gap with just the hilltop-finish ahead!

i.imgur.com/rb4g4Bf.jpg

It's getting closer though: 6.5km remaining and Schurter/Chamorro enter the finishing climb with a 1'20"-gap on the peloton!

Given their GC-position, they are both definitely a real GC-threat now.. still a way to go, of course.

i.imgur.com/I26m96n.jpg

Especially, as we now see the first attacks out of the bunch:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Losada is the next to put pressure on Rodrigues, launching his move 6km to the line!

i.imgur.com/zjpKvGo.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo goes, too! Just a few moments later, the top-favorite tries to jump behind Losada.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues now trying to follow as well, accompanied by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Sorensen. The big guns make their moves!

i.imgur.com/tOkgiVD.jpg

And more riders have to follow: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Tiernan-Locke, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Paulinho and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Duenas were the next to go.

Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Ochoa Quintero/Beltran, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rodas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Paulinho don't want to miss out on this maybe crucial attacks!

This group with Ochoa is already down by 40" on Rodrigues and 55" on Arroyo, while the leading duo holds on to a comfortable gap..

i.imgur.com/v6Mk1og.jpg

..yap, it's looking good for Schurter/Chamorro, as they enter the final 1.5km with quite a gap on Losada and the following groups!

i.imgur.com/yfFFqBN.jpg

43" on Losada, to be precisive!

Arroyo still trying to join him and holding off Rodrigues, of course. Tiernan-Locke as the only one of those latest attackers to stay clear from the bunch, which is back to 132 riders after swallowing group Ochoa/Beltran.

i.imgur.com/eVtQWFw.jpg

The escaping duo will fight for both the stage and the GC now: Chamorro had the worse position when they kick off their sprint..

i.imgur.com/tsrFkgn.jpg

..and so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter takes out this stage by 11" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Chamorro! A tactical well played stage for Sauber, who sent Schurter into the break. Will he also take the GC-lead today?

i.imgur.com/o1mgYhx.jpg

It will be a close one, but at least race-leader Rodrigues couldn't yet bridge across Arroyo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Losada, who's going to finish 3rd today thanks to a strong effort to hold off Arroyo til the line:

+ 58" for Losada eventually..

i.imgur.com/XsH6LOa.jpg

+ 1'06" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo

+ 1'19" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Sorensen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues!

+ 1'48" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Tiernan-Locke

+ 1'55" for the peloton with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Ochoa and most of the remaining GC-contenders..

i.imgur.com/AfiJLPs.jpg

The jury decides to give some further gaps inside a splintered peloton, which is horrible news for some GC-contenders, who struggled on that final climb:

+ 2'36" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Ardila or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png De Greef

+ 2'54" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Orozco, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Haga and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab! The latter crosses the line as 73rd today and clearly hadn't the best legs. Might have gone for a too aggressive race yesterday..

But now for the GC-changes.... yes: Schurter also slips into yellow! He enters tomorrow's queen stage with a 12"-advantage on Rodrigues, 22" on Chamorro and 25" on Losada! Arroyo moves up to 5th thanks to his efforts today. He needs to put some more pressure on Rodrigues/Schurter tomorrow.

It's still a quite open GC from 5th downwards and also less stronger climbers like Schurter or Chamorro will need to survive that mountain stage tomorrow..
