Tour d'Andorra - Stage 5
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_001_zps3ddede14.jpg

The tour concludes with a tough stage, featuring a 3-lap-circuit with 9 climbs in total, finishing after a tricky descend.. no sprints, no KoM (so Brajkovic did already win at least one shirt here).. just climb and survive..

And of course a thrilling battle for the overall win: Pozzovivo slipped into yellow yesterday, leading the GC by just 4" on Brajkovic as his most dangerous competitor. But also Abal or Marquez may still fancy their chances given the tough challenge today!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_002_zpsbaaa9465.jpg

A 6-men-group of quite strong climbers, who couldn't really compete with the very best though, went clear early into stage and is allowed to go for the break of the day:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets (28th in GC, + 10.57)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Georgiev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Efimkin (26th, + 10.46)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Navarro (17th, + 8.18)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland (29th, + 12.12)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Augustyn

Guys like Karpets or Efimkin may try to at least attack the Top-20 in GC that way, while Navarro as the best-placed in GC may either go for a Top-15 or a tactical move to support his captain Intxausti later on.. and of course, it's about going for stage honours!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_003_zpsc961d304.jpg

Team Kappa would take care of controlling the gap and as we now enter the final 30km, they did pretty well: 2'18" advantage for the early escapees at this point.

Another group of sub-top climbers now tries to bridge the gap (again, it's a mix of going for stage and a final chance to improve in GC):

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Soler (18th, + 8.35)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Elissonde (30th, + 12.18)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Jeannesson (19th, + 8.46)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Jamarillo (37th)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nieve (16th, + 7.38)

So riders like Nieve, Navarro, Soler and Jeannesson definitely put some pressure on Top-15-riders like Panayotov or Maillet, who do not have that much of a gap in GC!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_004_zps92d5075d.jpg

Just a few moments later, we see the most notable attack so far: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo (12th in GC) and - more important - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic (2nd, + 0.04) launch their first moves on this penultimate climb! The race for GC-glory is on!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_005_zpsdf3d395d.jpg

Hard to cover all the action on this climb now, as this move by Brajkovic and Cataldo of course would cause some more action in the bunch:

while most of the early escapees are quickly swallowed by the latest attackers (with Jeannesson and Elissonde taking the lead for now), several GC-contenders did counter Brajkovic's move. Like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Duarte, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez on first hand!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_006_zps2e48e68f.jpg

Intxausti had some problems to follow, but he catches up to this new bigger leading group 17km before finish: we're on the final climb! Jeannesson and Elissonde couldn't hold on to their lead and it's now a 15-men-group at the very front:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Navarro, Intxausti
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Efimkin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Duarte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Georgiev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Augustyn
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Soler

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_007_zps45114f87.jpg

Yet missing this group are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski (though fighting his way back soon, it seems), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Lövkvist and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza (6th in GC), who doesn't really look too good today.. he may fear losing his GC-spot, as he's already 2'02" in arrears at this moment..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_008_zps639c9e89.jpg

15km to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets accelerates to drop the leading group (where Kiserlovski finally caught up to)! The Russian struggled to do anything good so far in this race and now goes all-in. The favorites let him go, as he's no threat for the GC anymore.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_009_zps312d5c16.jpg

Just 5km remaining and group Pozzo/Brajkovic is already 55" down on Karpets.. more important for the GC though: will Brajkovic wait for the sprint? At this point, it looks like it will come down to the remaining bonus seconds at the finish!

This group is reduced to 13 riders, by the way, as Georgiev and Efimkin were dropped close to the final mountaintop.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_010_zpsbbefa166.jpg

A late attack on this descend, 3.5km to the finish! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski (7th in GC) obviously noticed that Pedraza struggles to close up to this group (42" in arrears) and attacks his 6th in GC!

Following his move is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo! So he may not want to risk a sprint-decision between him and Brajkovic..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_011_zpse3cf79e2.jpg

The stage goes to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets though! A great effort by the veteran, who took benefit of the GC-contenders shadowing each other instead of following his move. He may even gain some spots back in the final GC, but more important is this stage-win after a rather disappointing tour he had.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_012_zps4194428e.jpg

Kiserlovski kicks off the chasing group's sprint as first, still with Pozzo at his wheel and group Brajkovic/Marquez/Abal being a few metres behind! Ain't looking good for Brajkovic to claim the overall victory..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Andorra/14Andorra_5_013_zps719325d8.jpg

And yes, it's a comfortable 2nd place for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo, who even went for small gap on the remaining group! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski sprints for today's 3rd, now hoping for Pedraza to lose more than minute on this group eventually..

..and... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza comes in 58" later, which may just be enough to hold on to his 6th in GC! GC's 10th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Lövkvist did eventually lose 2'20" on Karpets and may fear today's 5th i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo to make the Top-10 in GC!

In other news, 15 riders didn't make the time limit today. Check the list below...

But first of all, credit where credit is due: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Pozzovivo wins the Tour d'Andorra (plus the green jersey) with 27" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brajkovic and 46" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal, who couldn't put any pressure on the first two today.. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez has to settle for 4th ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti, who had his problems on the last three days.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza defended his 6th ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kiserlovski, and also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Duarte, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Lövkvist did enough to secure their Top-10-results here... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo 11th ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Navarro, who made a nice jump in GC thanks to his efforts today. Same goes for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets, who jumps from 28th to 15th place! So especially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Marzano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk won't like their losses today. Improving from 20th to 19th place: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych, who had a quiet day after yesterday's strong showing in the timetrial.
