Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 5
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0001.jpg

Will we see the first real sprint finish today? At least it`s the easiest stage as the first flat rated was still too hilly for the pure sprinters.

Top favourite must be i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Degenkolb followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Avelino and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Kip.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0002.jpg

3 riders form the early breakaway.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Martens
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Wellens
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Stybar
Best placed in the GC is young Belgium Wellens as 48th. But being 13'47 behind already not the biggest danger.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0006.jpg

None of them is interested in the KoM points. So Wellens takes them without any effort.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0009.jpg

125km left for the peloton and a bit more than 8min for the breakaway. Will they ruin the sprinter chances today?
At least the top sprinter teams are seen in the front now. Pokerstars, Prio Porto and ING get some support by B&O as well. With Sobota and Van der Lijke they have two fast riders. That said it`s still a small surprise as both are lacking the speed of the better sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0012.jpg

Also the next KoM goes to the Bpost rider. Martens and Stybar follow behind him but once again no interest and so they save the energy for the next kilometers.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0018.jpg

Martens takes the sprint ahead of Wellens and Stybar. But just like the KoM points, those are just ridden over the line without a sprint.

Back in the peloton the pace is still high. But it`s surprising to see some riders for a possible sprint train or even a lead sprinter doing the work with Bazajev, Maaskant and Van der Lijke.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0021.jpg

They still gave the peloton a huge fight until the end. So the catch came very late with 5,7km only.
This made it hard for sprint preperations obviously and we see quite a mess in front.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0023.jpg

2km later we have one long line of sprinters with ING being the only train of the day. Surprisingly weak placed Pokerstars sprinters and no B&O at all.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Degenkolb

Prio Porto with three riders trying to form a train but not done yet.
Pokerstars all over the field with a badly placed Degenkolb.
Ponzi in a good position in the hunt for even more bonus seconds.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0042.jpg

2km to go and the long train not really started yet.
From behind though Degenkolb (on the right) slowly coming forward and eventually could be able to get into the slipstream of the Prio Porto mini train.
In the middle it`s Kluge sprinting on his own from far behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0046.jpg

But let`s jump to the better placed sprinters.
With 1,7km to go Bazajev takes over and starts the sprint. This is quite early when seeing that he had to work during the stage already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0048.jpg

Also the leadout wasn`t the fastest. So the Prio Porto train is coming close on the right with Avelino still having one rider ahead, while Kip has to go into the wind already with 1km to go.
Guardini right behind him with Ponzi, Korzh, King and Kluge in the slipstream.
On the right Colbrelli and Degenkolb as well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0054.jpg

Kip vs Avelino at the moment.
Behind them Ponzi showing his full strength and going past Guardini.
Degenkolb and Kluge suffer from their long sprints it seems as they can`t go that fast any longer. Colbrelli, Korzh looking better actually.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0057.jpg

Last corner. 200m to go and Avelino takes the lead!
Kip suffering a lot now as also Ponzi is passing him and from behind Guardini also is faster.
Those four though with a small gap already to Kluge in 5th, who seems to have found his legs again.
And also from far behind Pozzato in his slipstream.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0060.jpg

So close. It`s definitely Avelino against Ponzi here as both go side by side towards the line.
Kip still hanging on to 3rd but Guardini is faster.
Then Kluge, Pozzato and Korzh fighting for the 5th.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0061.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tirreno%20Adriatico/mg2014_tirreno_5_PCM0063.jpg

After stages 2&3 Simone Ponzi also takes the 5th stage. What a race for him. Pure domination and other GC riders won`t like this as he already gained 1min in bonus seconds this way, which make it hard for those, who beat him by seconds in the hardest stages. But this is part of the sport and a great allrounder like Ponzi obviously is able to be strong on many terrains.

2nd for Avelino, who was close to a win here. If only their sprint train worked better and not only on the final 2km, then he could have won this for sure.

The 3rd was a close fight between Guardini and Kip. In the end the Italian takes it due to the higher speed in the end. Kip still on a good 4th after such a long sprint.

Behind them Pozzato beats Kluge for 5th. King came back strong on the last meters finishing on a strong 7th ahead of Korzh.
Degenkolb as 9th surely disappointed. This here was the stage, he expected a win. But the whole sprint preparations got messed up, which is quite a surprise as the team usually is known for their perfect leadouts trained again and again. Today though it wasn`t meant to be.

Colbrelli to complete the top10 for Simply Red Bull.

GC wise the only change is Ponzi extending his 3s lead over Boasson Hagen by 20s. Other than that all riders finished within the same time today.
