Stage 3 might be the first chance for the sprinters. But first they have to climb 3 longer hills, that aren`t the most difficult, but due to the length a higher pace here could hurt some of them.

It almost took half the stage until a breakaway was finally formed as so many riders tried to attack but were caught again.
In the end we already reached the sprint and the gap is still at 1min only for those four.

As expected Summerhill takes the first KoM. No fight is given to him by the others. Caruso and Echarri are crossing the line next to take the small points.

Next KoM and this time the US rider not even spending his energy with an attack. Obviously he realized that he is the only interested and so he just goes over the line while doing the pace.
Echarri this time 2nd ahead of Caruso.

72km left and a 3min gap. Ponzi`s Good Energy Team now chasing harder.
Their leader is a pretty decent sprinter as shown yesterday and in a weak sprinter field or after a hilly stage he mustn`t be underestimated.

The gap though is pretty consistent since the last check. With 40km to go and the last hill reached still 2'46 and so just a little bit less than 30km ago.

Some teams obviously want to reduce the sprinter field a bit as Volkswagen (Pozzato) comes to the front to chase hard.
Also the other sprinter teams Pokerstars, ING and Prio Porto with some work but always a bit slower than the Germans going for Pozzato.

Summerhill also takes the 3rd KoM today extending his lead by 17 points to 45.
2nd with 20 points only Santander`s Ortega. So quite a gap already.

Volkswagen`s pace indeed made a lot of riders struggle on that hill.

20km left and still 1'20 for the breakaway. And Volkswagen not slowing down keeping a high pace to avoid any sprinter coming back.
Also this way they keep some more riders, who just came over the hill within the peloton, struggling at the end of the group.

Bongiorno. Luckily all other riders were able to go around him and he can continue the race.

10km and Burghardt going solo now. The others are caught now and so it`s he vs. the rest.

But the strength behind was too much for him and so everybody is caught and the "sprinters" position themselves. That said, there barely are any sprinters and it`s more a fight between the fastest GC riders.

Pineau waits with the fast pace. Obviously they want to use Krizek as another leadout as he comes to the front now.
Meanwhile though Kluge and Boom come fast on the left being the only riders having started the sprint already with 2km to go.

Kluge runs out of energy it seems while Boom goes into the lead.
Behind them Pozzato in an unlucky first position now also starting the sprint. Ben Nasser got dropped a bit behind while Gasparotto is in a great position for the team.

No surprise that Boom also is caught now with 1km to go. He was in the wind far too early.
Ponzi and Bakelants now in the lead. Hagen, Sagan, Gasparotto and a struggling Pozzato after the long sprint behind.

Nobody really can match Ponzi, who looks super strong.
On the left road side Van Garderen also with nice speed coming forwards being the first of the 2nd "group" after the first 6.

But it`s Ponzi again with his 2nd stage win here. It also gives him another 20s against his biggest opponents in the GC fight.

Bakelants as 2nd and Boasson Hagen as 3rd also with nice bonuses.

Sagan, Pozzato and Gasparotto next showing that those 6 were the strongest until the line.

Van Garderen as 7th with a nice sprint as well ahead of Schleck, Valverde and Ricco.
