Today's got 166km, rated as flat, but looking at the profile we can see quite a few hills, which could tire out the sprinters. A quick look at the bookies confirms that thougth since they have Pozzato, Hagen and Bennati as favourites.


At the first sprint it's Joseph in front of van de Walle and Herrero Llorente(again). Van Aelbroeck, de Jongh and Jacobs are with them in the break. Sijmens and Riber-Sellebjerg missed out by a minute.

On the first hill, Sijmens manages to bridge the gap though as Joseph takes the KOM which is uncontested. In the pack, Vespa controls the gap around 8 minutes.

But then disaster struck for #13 in GC, Flecha as he crashed together with Jorgensen. Bad luck for him because noone is waiting for him, and the chase for the break had just started!

Not much later, Bosisio and Navardauskas crash as well, and with Bosisio and Vinokourov(who's already pretty tired) being the only chasers, the break takes some time back.

With 40km left the gap is back up to 4'20, while Bosisio gets back in the pack, and immediatly goes up front and takes a relay, which indicated the slow speed of the pack.
Meanwhile Jacobs took the second sprint before Sijmens and de Jongh.

When with 35km to go and the gap still being 4'30, finally some fresh riders join the chase.

As we reach the final hill with 15km to go and 2'30, van de Walle gives it a go. Although he is caugth soon, it does split up the break.

Sijmens reaches the top first with only Herrero Llorente and van de Walle left on his wheel. They've got 9km left to cover and 1'40 advantage to do so. This could be it, since there is still a decent to take.

But it that very decent, there is another crash in the peloton. It's going so fast though, it's not quite clear who it are.

4.5km to go and 40 seconds left. This gap is coming down very fast. Up front in the pack, the only sprinters seem to be Pozzato, Napolitano and Bennati.

The report about the crash is on Radio Tour now; "Casi, le seguenti ciclisti; Loddo, Moletta, Tondo, Posthuma, Gavazzi, Hutchings, Hagen, Rizza e Kozontchuk."
Hagen? Yes, Boasson Hagen has crashed, number three in GC!

Meanwhile, the sprint goes on; Sijmens is off as only Bennati and Napolitano remain up front in the pack as sprinters. It's seems sure the break wont be caugth though.

Under the arch of the final kilometer, Sijmens stopped sprinting though, as he's got a gap, while Bennati catapulted himself forwards with Napolitano right on his wheel. They've caugth up with Herrero and van de Walle, but Sijmens surely is out of reach?

But they're getting very close, very fast! Is Sijmens throwing away the victory?

Yes he is! Bennati can't believe it either, but yes, he's won the fourth stage with it being his second! Sijmens does hang on to second with Napolitano third. As an indication of Bennati's and Napolitano's high speed; they've sprinted away from the pack.

The pack comes in with Hushovd up front, 20 seconds later.
Now, we've got to wait for Hagen to come in and see if there's anyhting left of his GC. This is a real pity for him and his team, after yesterday's second place.
He comes in at 2'47 with other crashed rider... but... he's not chasing... he's doing something else instead? Right... talk about giving up.
