One of the hardest stages of this race with with several hills. Almost no single flat kilometer. The finish though is on a flat after the last descent. So winning solo could be hard as groups could fusion again on the way down.
Early KoM sprint. No group has formed yet but some riders did attack for the points or a group attempt?
Borges takes the 5 points ahead of Chu and De Greef.
As the same trio plus a few more riders were also at the sprint and now got a good gap, we have the break of the day.
Borges
Chu
De Greef
Ebsen
Chaabane
Chamorro
Most dangerous is Chaabane being only +1'02. But also Chu and Borges are just 1&2s behind him.
De Greef takes the Cat.3 ahead of Borges and Chu. With so many points given today, they have a good chance to make a big jump in the rankings. Also taking over the KoM jersey is a possibility.
Surprisingly Chamorro, who is 2nd in the KoM ranking with 19 points already is not even going for the sprint here.
Behind the teams of Jose Mendes and Simon Geschke are mainly working. 80km and a bit more than 5min gap during the longest climb of the day at half time.
On the next two KoM sprints Chamorro is at least trying. But he is not strong enough to take any points.
First De Greef, Borges and Chu, then Borges taking the lead ahead of De Greef and Chu.
Bank of Ireland obviously not seeing a too big danger with ~60km and a 4min gap.
And as Evonik was not able to win a stage yet on suited terrain, they go full power now.
Many sprinters like Forero, Serebriakov or Fonseca are dropped now and fall back into the gruppetto.
18km: Last climb of the day and still a 2'30 gap. Chaabane as best placed sees a big opportunity to take over the leader jersey. Only Ebsen is trying to follow him.
Behind Geschke is not happy with the other teams doing no work and is attacking as well. Not again he wants to see a possible stage win slipping away.
Some riders follow him:
Bugge
Duggan
But now lots of other riders go as well.
Pozdnyakov
Tiernan-Locke
Wyss
Montaguti
Rosskopf
Mendes
Passalacqua
Leader change at the front. Borges really wants the KoM jersey and sprinted to the next 6 points, which will indeed give him the KoM lead.
Chaabane and De Greef follow next.
Bank of Ireland has taken over again after all favourites were not able to create a gap.
With a gap of 2'30 now, the race lead is in huge danger. Too early they have stopped their chasing hoping for other teams doing all the work for them.
Borges with the ride of his life. He has distanced his companions and is aiming the stage win.
Evonik has realized that Geschke won`t win today with the break still ahead. So it`s up to the other GC teams of BoI, ASDA and TomTom to reduce the time loss and to keep their GC podium chances alive.
The riders ahead of decent puncheurs and only the last stage is expected to deliver some gaps again.
Huge day for Borges. KoM lead, U25 lead, Stage win and probably also the new GC leader! Could you reach any more on one stage? Even the point and team ranking lead is possible depending on the order behind!
The fight for the 2nd is won by De Greef ahead of Chaabane, Ebsen and Chu. They finish with 1'16 behind, which already guarantees Borges to become the new leader with a good gap actually.
Chamorro was not able to follow them and comes in a bit later but still ahead of the peloton.
+2'43 for Pozdnyakov, who wins the bunch sprint for 7th! Olsson, Selander and Geschke to complete the top 10.
But more important, we have a completely new podium now. Borges 1'25 ahead of Chaabane and 4s more for Chu.
Mendes follows as former leader already with a +2'04 gap.
This though makes the last stage very interesting as the big GC favourites need to ride aggressive to drop this trio now.
