Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Stage 3

We continue on hard terrain. It`s not as mountainous as the Kitzbüheler Horn of course but 4 climbs on the program today. Can Alarcon defend his lead or will stronger puncheurs come closer to him?

The first KoM is won by Bjelkmark ahead of Devenyns and Montenegro.
They belong to a bunch of riders who try to escape.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_2.jpg

9 riders finally are allowed to build todays group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_4.jpg

Behind Aker Solution is doing all the work to control the peloton.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_6.jpg

2nd KoM and this one is a big pointer. 16pts to Devenyns ahead of Bjelkmark, Montenegro, Quintana, Saldarriaga, Montana and Vantornout.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_7.jpg

The Pirelli duo in front is not working at all. Obviously Van Den Broeck is feeling good and has other plans. So with 60km to go and 5'23 gap it`s not looking too good for the group.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_9.jpg

Pirelli was also ordered to the front in the peloton. Together with Vespa and Proximus they are doing the work now.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_11.jpg

30km and the breakaway starts the climb with 3min advance.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_12.jpg

The peloton is far too big for the narrow roads and so we see a split.
Especially Aker did well to bring Alarcon to the front. Also Ben Nasser, Van Den Broeck and the Bianchi duo Lloret and De la Fuente in the first group.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_14.jpg

Valverde is even a few groups behind together with Ratiy, Caruso and Ruijgh. Lövkvist is another group behind. These are obviously the losers at the moment.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_18.jpg
Meanwhile Pozzovivo, Rujano and Txurruka found contact to the Alarcon group.

Just 1min ahead of the favourites the breakaway crosses the top. Vantornout takes the 16pts. Devenyns takes 8 and so also the lead at the moment as Bjelkmark isn`t scoring.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_22.jpg
Also Valverde made contact to the Alarcon group. Behind Caruso and Ruijgh are still trying, while Duarte, Krasnoperov, Ratiy and Lövkvist are still further behind. So is Kolesnikov.

Ruijgh and Caruso really speed up the descent pulling Arndt with them.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_29.jpg

In front the breakaway is more or less caught. Some are still trying to attack.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_31.jpg

Also Alarcon is attacking on the last climb. This of course puts high pressure on the others.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_33.jpg

Caruso worked hard and found contact again. Good effort by him. Also Ruijgh is just behind him.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_34.jpg

Valverde attacks and Pozzovivo and the just caught Alarcon follow.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_36.jpg

They got a nice gap to the rest and are already in the descent.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_37.jpg

Rujano and Lloret are coming next trying to fusion with them again. 20s between them and also 20s to Van Den Broeck and Ben Nasser behind.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_38.jpg

With 3km to go Pozzovivo starts the sprint. Valverde surely the strongest here , while Alarcon might be happy to be in the first group.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_42.jpg

Alarcon is coming on the left while Valverde chooses the right side.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_43.jpg

And the Spaniard takes the win. Alarcon 2nd, Pozzovivo 3rd.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_44.jpg

The next two groups came together in the end. Ben Nasser finishing 4th. Good result for Proximus. Rujano, Lloret and Van Den Broeck all in this group losing 24s on the winner.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_45.jpg

But gaining almost 1min on the next group including Caruso.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_46.jpg

2'22 later Ruijgh comes in next together with some riders of the former break mainly. Unfortunately he was blocked my them and wasn`t able to join the earlier group just like Caruso.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Austria/mg_austria_3_47.jpg
All other overall riders lose more than 4min today. Lövkvist even 9'37 and is just around the D2 riders Laverde, Sohrabi and Melero.

Again no D2 appearance in the breakaway. What is the reason for their weak performance so far?
