Today is the last chance for the climbers who want to do something in this race to show off their skills because after today there are no more mountains in this year’s Rundfahrt. Andy Schleck will need some time on Menchov today if he wants to win this race and some of the other favourites who didn’t gain time yesterday will need to take a step forward to seperate themselves from the pack. The stage only feature one real mountain, and that’s at the very end of the stage.
The break of the day contained 4 riders. Hulsmans, Kozontchouk, Stangelj and Stundzia. Behind was another quartet chasing with Arreitunandia, Van Poppel, Kovalev and Willems.
Stangelj won the only KoM Sprint besides today’s finish line after 40 km. At this point Arreitunandia had almost singlehandedly bridged up to the four leaders. He finally made the junction in the descent alongside Willems. At this point they had 4 minutes on the pack with 125 kilometres to go.
Going up an un-categorized climb with 95 kilometres to go Pardilla attacked from the peloton with Evgeni Petrov and Niemiec countering him.
They worked well together and soon build up a lead of over 2 minutes. At the 50 kilometres mark there was a points sprint which Willems won. At this point the six leaders had about 7 minutes on the pack, but with Arreitunandia being the only decent climber they shouldn’t prove any challenge. The trio with Niemiec, Pardilla and Petrov could present a challenge though as they had 2’30 on the pack as they hit the base of the final climb with 22 kilometres to the top.
At this point a split occured in the pack with Andy Schleck and Riccardo Ricco getting caught in the wrong end of it.
A few kilometres later the two groups the pack had split up into merged again and quickly Schleck and Ricco rejoined the front. Arreitunandia had left his breakaway companions and he was soloing up the mountain with a 4’38 advantage on the pack.
Can Arreitunandia hold off the favourites?
This was the deficit with 16 kilometres to the top. Five kilometres later and the race was on back in the pack as the favourites started attacking. Fothen went first and the German pulled in a powerful effort that no-one could follow up on. Andy Schleck also got away but he couldn’t quite bridge up.
In a matter of no time Fothen caught the leading rider Arreitunandia and left him in an instant.
If you are wondering what became of the trio with Niemiec, Pardilla and Petrov then they were caught by Fothen just moments before he bridged up to Arreitunandia. Petrov was very strong though and he managed to cling on to the group of favourites for quite some time.
So this what it looks like with 7 kilometres left. Fothen leads Schleck by a slim margin, while Pedraza had broken clear of a group of 16 riders in which all the other favourites including Menchov were sitting. Surprisingly the Russian didn’t have the strenght to go clear and his overall lead was seriously endangered as Schleck had already taken 1 minute at this point. Fothen couldn’t keep Schleck behind him and with about 5 kilometres to go it is Fothen and Schleck in front.
With 5 kilometres to go the duo in front had 52 seconds on the Menchov Group. Schleck is heading for the jersey! And Andy was really motoring as Fothen had to let go with under 2 kilometres to go!
Andy Schleck goes under the flame rouge by himself.
The group of 16 isn’t far off though as they’re limiting their loss very well.
Andy Schleck wins!
Fothen loses 9 seconds as he comes in 2nd, a good ride nevertheless as he is not out of the fight for the win, with a time trial remaining.
Pozzovivo leads in the next group of 12 riders, as 4 of the 16 was dropped within the last kilometre.
