Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Stage 2
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_001_zps198aed53.jpg

Without any doubts the queen stage in this tour and therefore a crucial day for anyone aiming for the GC: 161km in total, the summit finish up the "Kitzbüheler Horn" features average slopes of 10%!

The GC-favorites attacked late yesterday, which still made for some gaps. Nazaret soloed to a narrow GC-lead with a group around Intxausti showing it's strengths, too. We should see the same names at the front today.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_002_zps0e0879de.jpg

It took quite a while for a duo to go clear for the first breakaway: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Njoroge and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi, who are joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Tsikhanau 110km before finish to make it a 3-men-escaping group. The Belarusian (+ 11.15) as the best-placed in the GC, so no real threat anymore.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_003_zps58f54dc2.jpg

Tsikhanau would also take the first KoM-sprint, while Njoroge took the second - and those two would drop Pirazzi that way!

This leading duo is 2'44" in the lead with 53km remaining and we see a next group of 4 riders attacking the peloton:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Torres, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brandt, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Gilanipoor! Quite a promising group with Torres (+ 1.36 as 15th in GC) in particular, as he did so well in the opener.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_004_zps38d31c6e.jpg

Which may be the reason for this second attacking group not really being able to go for a clear gap later on. Of course the peloton was on the chase anyway.

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Torres won't give up and he attacks at the bottom of the Kitzbüheler Horn (just 10km to go now)!

He's again followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brandt, while also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal tries to put some early pressure on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret, who jumps behind quickly, just as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Nepomnyachsniy!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_005_zps2caa431a.jpg

It's just a short-lived attempt by Abal though, as the big guns settle down for a moment, once Abal/Nazaret is pulled back by the bunch.

Torres is again joined by Brandt, Heider and also Gilanpoor. Those four's second serious attempt to go clear. The escaping duo Njoroge/Tsikanou still leads by more than 3 minutes at this point!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_006_zps0d166429.jpg

But they lose ground quickly: group Torres/Brandt catches up to the leading duo 6.5km before finish.

In the meantime, the bunch is down to 35 riders and just 1'20" in arrears, as we see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Ardila Cano launching his first move today!

Most notable names being dropped: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Niemiec, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Stetina (GC's 10th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Navarro and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk (GC's 9th)! This is quite a surprise and they will have a tough time bridging across the leading bunch.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_007_zps629282c7.jpg

Especially as the pace is up with now just 5km to go: the early escapees are joined by group Torres/Brandt now, while also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza bridged across this now 7-men-group!

Just 45" behind though, a group with the remaining GC-favorites. Of Pedraza is the biggest the threat now (5th in GC, + 0.30)!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_008_zps353e7bb9.jpg

And he's too much of danger to just let him go clear with also a teammate in this leading group: a few moments later, the bunch of top-favorites (38 riders) pulled the group back and the race settled down for a moment.

This is, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Torres went for another acceleration and opened up a minutes-gap quickly! He's definitely the most aggressive rider today and enters the final 3.5km with a clear gap!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_009_zps17f2e594.jpg

He may become a real threat for the GC, too: 1.6km to go and Torres (+ 1.36 in the GC) still holds on to a 1'14"-gap on the chasing group (28 riders)!

When will we see the next serious attacks here? Will Torres really fight his way to attack race-leader Nazaret?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_010_zps0a60831f.jpg

Just a few seconds later, we finally see some more action:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti attack the group of favorites 1.9km to the line, this putting some more pressure on Nazaret in particular..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_011_zpsbe807489.jpg

The Brazilian went for his move a few moments later: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret couldn't yet quite follow this strong group Intxausti/Marquez and faces a 30"-gap with about 1.4km to go!

Torres' lead is down to 1'08" in the meantime, but it does indeed look like he will win this stage..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_012_zpsc9fea338.jpg

Yes, he does: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Torres takes out this queen stage here in Austria! A well deserved win after his many attacks today. He of course took benefit of the top-favorites settling down once Pedraza was caught. Very good tactical plays by Mobil here.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_013_zps4b8312d2.jpg

Back to the chasing group, where Intxausti goes for another acceleration with just a few hundred metres to go! He opens up a small gap on his three companions that way..

..while Nazaret still fights to bridge across those three: 23"-disadvantage though! The next group keeps pacing to limit the losses..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_014_zps86a25f87.jpg

And here today's 2nd crosses the line with a maybe crucial gap on the following riders:

+ 45" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti

+ 58" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez

+ 1'20" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret

So Intxausti narrowed the gap on Torres back to less than a minute and may be the one to slip into yellow today. A huge day for Mobil though, with two riders in this Top-6.

+ 2'10" for the next big group with most of the remaining GC-contenders..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_015_zps88f2bb0e.jpg

..except of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk (+ 4.15) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Stetina (+ 4.47) as the most notable names losing big time today. This duo did quite well yesterday, but clearly hadn't the best legs on this queen stage, unfortunately.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_2_016_zps3ce84bad.jpg

Intxausti definitely had better legs to slip into yellow! The top-favorite went late to go for crucial seconds, now leading an all-spanish podium ahead of Abal and Marquez! A close one for both Torres (same time as Marquez) and Nazaret, who drops to 5th with just 17" disadvantage on Intxausti though. Pedraza as the maybe last remaining GC-threat, as GC's 7th Nepomnyachsniy is already down by 1'52" on Intxausti.

Still a way to go and this close Top-6 could of course make for some thrilling stages. And let's not forget about the decisive timetrial.
