Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Stage 1
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_001_zps66aaf082.jpg

The GC-fight here should already be kicked off on the two opening stages, with today's 165km route featuring a summit finish on "Kühtai" (21km, 6.5% slopes). It's the easier of two consecutive mountaintop finishes, but it's of course a challenging one.

Premium climbers like Intxausti, Abal, Nazaret and ever dangerous Marquez are considered as the top-favorites for the GC and will have to deliver already today!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_002_zpsfc170831.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Bostner and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Bazhkou went for an early breakaway attempt, establishing a 2-minutes-advantage with the first of six short climbs in the loop around Innsbruck.

Bostner takes the first two intermediate sprints, as well as the first KoM-sprint!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_003_zps3e8b2376.jpg

It's just a short-lived breakaway, as the peloton (Quickstep and Bacardi in particular) pulls the duo back with still 91km remaining!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_004_zps4396cf92.jpg

It won't be the last attempt to break clear though: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Gilanipoor, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brandt and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Soler try to escape with now 57km to go and two more climbs before we enter the long ascend up the Kühtai!

This trio would be joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Sano a few moments later..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_005_zps8c016448.jpg

..but it's just Soler, who manages to establish a 1'50"-gap on the still strong going bunch (105 riders left) with now 29km remaining. He also took the last KoM-sprint prior to the finishing climb:

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Bostner 6 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Soler 6 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Bazkhou 4

This provisional classification is of course likely to change with the Kühtai (20pts for the first at the line) still to come!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_006_zps9674bfb9.jpg

With just one empty-handed attack by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider, it's still Soler fighting his way solo to the mountaintop: 12km to go and the peloton is down by just 32" and 49 riders remaining in this group!

Most notable names being dropped so far: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Niemiec and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri, who both are already more than two minutes in arrears at this point.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_007_zpsc10140e1.jpg

Bacardi and Quickstep keep the pace high and Soler is reeled in by the 33-men-peloton close to the 5km-mark! It looks like the top-favorites are going to take this one serious, for obvious reasons..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_008_zpsb88802fa.jpg

3.2km to go and still no attacks: this is more like an elimination race with Bacardi and Quickstep showing it's strength at the front of this group, that is down to 21 riders in the meantime:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Zeits, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pum.png Heider, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Plaza, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Ortega, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Brandt and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann as the most notable names being dropped now! This is horrible news for Gerdemann in particular, as the is definitely the GC-threat for Karcher here, but already down by 1'54" at this point! Those two teams at the front really deliver so far!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_009_zps788cb657.jpg

And just when it looked like we will see a quiet day here, the first serious attacks lead to another major split in this elite group!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret launches his first move with just one kilometre to go, followed by

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Intxausti
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Abal
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pedraza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Ji
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Nepomnyachsniy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Ardila Cano
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Topchanyuk

Nazaret looking strong with his move, while those 9 riders open up a 32"-gap on the next group (12 riders) quickly!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_010_zps35093d97.jpg

Nazaret indeed with a strong acceleration, as the went for a 7"-gap with just a few hundred metres remaining!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_011_zps740d8688.jpg

Marquez, Intxausti, Abal and Pedraza with a small disadvantage on Nazaret, but also opening up another gap on the next 4-men-group with Ji, Nepomnyachsniy, Cano and Topchanyuk!

The 12-men-group with Augustyn, Rohregger, Nerz and Stetina is further 28" in arrears..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_012_zpsee7b59b2.jpg

..while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nazaret fights til the end to hold on to a maybe crucial gap there! Definitely a strong showing and important stage-win for him anyway.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_IntOst/14IntOst_1_013_zpsf0308e1b.jpg

+ 2'47" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Zeits

+ 3'25" for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri

It might have been expected, that the top-climbers would just go for late attacks today and tomorrow's summit finish on the Kitzbüheler Horn will definitely be more challenging. Anyway, Nazaret proved his strength today and given his TT-skills, he's definitely one of those contenders, who need to put pressure on Intxausti/Abal on this mountain stages. He will lead the GC, points- and KoM-competition when entering tomorrow's queen stage!
