Vantomme, Rowe (Very strange that it's not Docker or even Vaitkus), and Guillen are marked as favourites for 150kms of flat racing.
It's a slow opening 10kms before 4 riders finally breakaway,
Fabbri (+46" )
Appleby (+33" )
Petrovski (+30" )
Keukeleire (+41" )
And they ride away nice and easily, so that bring us to the first sprint point. Fabbri opens it up, and is a rather strong sprinter to be in a breakaway.
Fabbri takes it even with a late surge by Keukeleire, who is also a decent sprinter to be in a breakaway. Appleby picks up what is left as Petrovski is left in the dust.
A third of the race is complete as we hit 100kms to go. BPost, BCR, and Rothaus are in control of the peloton but are still allowing the breakaway to grow out their lead as the gap reaches 6'20".
A few seconds later our first real victim of the tour, Silvestre gets a flat.
What the, it's not a flat, Silvestre has gotten off his bike and gone into the team car...!?! I have no idea what is going on. "He has given up," the TV broadcaster says, this doesn't make any sense. Perhaps Adira can answer the cause of this after the stage because I honestly don't know what to say. He didn't crash, I thought he could of had a flat (I guess not), maybe he is sick? I don't know... very strange but Silvestre has withdrawn from the race!
We move forward, I guess, the breakaway gets to the middle sprint point with a 5'30" lead, as Keukeleire take it over Petrovski and Fabbri. The deciding factor in these sprints is the starting location so far.
50kms to go the lead was been squeezed down to 3'30".
The final sprint point with 27kms to go sees Keukeleire beat out Fabbri and Petrovski. But also we get to see a lot of tricky turns within the final 5kms of racing.
Here is one of those trick bends as Airbaltic have now start working on the front, but the question remains; who are they working for?
All these twists and turns on this final circuit are making it hard for the peloton to track down the breakaway, that said the lead is only 50 seconds with 12kms to go.
Just as the breakaway is caught, 2 UPC men (Berkhout and Kavsek) touch wheels and go down right in front of Rizza. As he tries to avoid them he loses control of his bike as well. Just 8kms to go. It is getting really dangerous out there.
Hochmann has dropped back to help Rizza! I have feeling the Die Berg manager isn't going to happy this... and I think I just saw Hochmann turn off the race radio in his ear. He is throwing away the stage and with some luck could have been a good GC placing to help his teammate (no matter what Vien was screaming in his ear to do).
But we have no time for team drama as there is only 5kms to go and BCR have overtaken the front of the peloton for Guillen!
We have escaped the corner that wrecked the UPC boys and perhaps will start a fist fight at the Die Berg team bus after the race; Vantomme has put the pieces together to challenge Guillen on the right side of the rode.
A dangerous time to open up a sprint with 2kms to go on such a sharp turn, but here we go!
It's Cano leading out a waiting Guillen with Nelson waiting on his wheel. Over to his right is Van Heerden setting up Vantomme. Behind them is Van Poppel looking to build up the UPC name after they caused the first wreck of the tour. And further back is group of sprinters looking for space and more speed.
Tzortzakis
Kip
Loocke
Vaitkus
Hushovd and Kreder
Bennett
1,000 meters left as Guillen goes for it, behind Vantomme slots into Guillen's train behind Nelson (before he shoots out to the right). Van Poppel, Vaitkus and Kip all position themselves next in line.
Vantomme quickly moves past Nelson and goes after Guillen but with 300 meters left can he catch him?
Behind them the battle for 3rd is taken by Vaitkus going around Nelson with Kip, Van Poppel fighting it out for 5th. Then Van Loocke and holding off the Sweedbank sprinter of Kreder and Hushovd. But the man with the most power here in the dash to the finish is Drapac coming up the outside barrier.
Jump back to the battle for the victory...
Vantomme waited a tad to long, so Guillen holds on for the stage win!
3rd to Vaitkus, then Nelson, Kip, and Kreder all missing out on the bonus seconds.
Cornu hangs onto the leader's jersey for another day, and he is probably hoping the next few flat stages aren't going to produce as much drama as was seen today. But for guys like me that have to report and the spectators watching at home, today was a a lot of fun for a flat stage!
