Olympia's Tour - Stage 1

This Dutch tour will start with a Team Time Trial, which is quite short and will only produce relatively small gaps. Still seconds here and there could prove useful in the final shake up and we will get our first race leader.

Out of the 12 squads on show, Tinkoff, who have numerous useful TTers are showing themselves to be favourites. Pokerstars with fine lead out train riders should be good over this sort of distance as well and Pendletons with the Millar/Wiggins combination is another to keep ones eye on.

The random draw took place and it was Pokerstars who were our first starters...

Pokerstars

They get into their organisation quickly as we have come to expect from this team. Two names that are stand out here are Stef Clement for the overall and the excellent German sprinter Eric Mohs. They steam through in a very good looking time of 11.21. The next team to come close to this time was Ikea-Bianchi

Ikea

This team was inspired by Gustav Larsson, who is probably their best GC bet here, though Flugel could be dangerous on the last day and Giaux will try to get in amongst them in the sprints. They cannot quite match Pokerstars but are only 3 seconds down on them at the end. Tinkoff might have been favourites but they could only match Ikea's time, indeed it was Pendletons who were having a stormer.

Pendletons

A determined effort from the British team and they were very fast beating Pokerstars' useful time by a full 7 seconds. They have a couple of rider who can stick hills quite well, Bozic is also capable of getting bonuses as the race goes on. Milka and 100% Me came in 17 and 19 seconds slower and the last team out were Petronas.

Petronas

This team have been having a good season, Gerrans is probably their best GC bet and he will be moderately happy that his team was able to match Milka's time by the finish.

But no-one could match the speed of Pendletons and it was Butterfield who come over first for them to take the first leaders jersey. Time gaps are not huge but with Intesa, Falcon, Pirelli, Bbox and Youtube being out of time bonuses away from Pendletons it will be hard for them to move into the leaders jersey any time soon!
