Giro del Capo - Stage 1
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-1.jpg

Today’s first stage of the Giro del Capo is hot and windy and the course layout means that at times the riders will have headwinds, tailwinds and yes – even crosswinds. The favourites for today are fairly unsurprising for a day that is strongly expected to finish in a bunch sprint. Top of the list is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Daryl Impey, but he will have strong competition, particularly from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathon Bellis. Other names to watch out for are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Gatto, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Rizza, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marinangelli, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Vingerling and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Haidar Anuawar, all of whom are good in a sprint and some of them can also climb decently well. It remains to be seen how selective the climb will be. It is 5.3km in length and averages over 5%. It is surely not steep enough to cause a massive selection but it might well sort out one or two of the prospective sprinters.

A trio of riders start off our attacks today. They are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Mazur, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Wolf and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.pngHaugard.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-2.jpg

As always, this first attack of the day spurs a whole raft of riders looking to follow in their wake. A number of small attacks join up together to form a second group on the road following our 3 leaders. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rowsell
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bar
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Puccio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Masciarelli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Scully
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Lund
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Ghyllebert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Talansky

In addition, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Van Ooijen is seeking to bridge up on his own.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-3.jpg

The 12 riders all come together to create one big lead group. With this many riders they should be able to keep together quite well in order to stay away. Rapha have a rather surprising tactic here by putting a rider in the break. Maybe they don’t fancy Bellis for the break or are they just trying to avoid pacing on the front?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-4.jpg

The group is only given a maximum gap of 4’16”, which on a course that is only 109km long is hardly surprising. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Cerne do most of the work on the front for LL Sanchez, with some occasional help from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Vespa.

The break gets to the only sprit prime of the day, and it is an incredibly hot contest. If they can stay away these bonus seconds could prove crucial. Ghyllebert takes the sprint ahead of Masciarelli and Van Ooijen comes in third. This means that whatever happens Ghyllebert will be in a nice position on GC at the end of the day.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-5.jpg

The pack is led through the prime by Vespa and Cerne, with the lead now down to 2’54”. There are 37km remaining, but more importantly there is the 5.5km climb to deal with. A few of the teams start to come to the front, with Red Bull particularly noticeable. Almost their whole team is up there setting the pace.

Just before the climb begins there is another attack. This time it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Kevin Seeldraeyers. He has 2’30” to bridge in order to get to the break. If he can get a stage win here he will make the race for Emu Export. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Tom Criel joins him in his effort to get away.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-6.jpg

The most that these two can get is 20”, as Red Bull, WWE and Ferrari set a hot tempo. They are brought back in before the climb even starts.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-7.jpg

Up front Haugard is dropped from the break as the better puncheurs set the pace. The gap steadily comes down along the way but at the peak they still have just over a minute. The riders attack for the mountain points, and the winner is guaranteed the jersey at the end of the day. No one can match the acceleration of Jocelyn Bar, who nets the mountain jersey at least for one day for his Puma team. Mazur is second, and Lund is third.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-8.jpg

Near the peak, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Tom Stubbe launches an attack. He gets up to Haugard, who is so blown that he can’t come to the front to help pace away again. The pace is too high from the bunch and Stubbe is brought back in just over the top.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-9.jpg

At the start of the descent the break fractures. Several more riders are dropped. The dropped riders are Wolf, Puccio, Rowsell and Scully, who form a chase group behind the leaders. Under the 10km to go banner the situation is:

24”1’04”1’28”
7 Leaders--->4 Chasers--->Peleton

The long descent has definitely harmed the peleton’s chances and it is clear that this is going to come down to the breakaway sprinting it out for victory. Puccio almost succeeds in dragging the chasers up, but they fall off his pace and he can’t close the gap himself. This is further confirmed when the gap stays almost the same to the peleton under the 5km to go banner.

So to the group sprint, and Mazur is in the unfortunate position of having to lead out the bunch. Their order is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Mazur
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bar
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Van Ooijen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Talansky
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Lund
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Masciarelli
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Ghyllebert

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-10.jpg

Masciarelli is the first to make a move and he launches from second last wheel. Ghyllebert sticks to his wheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-11.jpg

Masciarelli comes past the rest of the group. Everyone holds off from launching their sprint.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-12.jpg

Behind them, Bar realises he has to go and he comes around Mazur. Everyone starts to fan across the road. Van Ooijen puts in a strong acceleration.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-13.jpg

With 400m to go Ghyllebert puts in his dig to get around Masciarelli. Can he do it?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-14.jpg

And he does! Ghyllebert takes the stage and the first yellow jersey of this year’s Giro del Capo.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Capo1-15.jpg

Masciarelli is second, Lund comes around Bar for third place. Van Ooijen is in fourth, Talansky is fifth and Bar fades into sixth. The man unlucky enough to lead them out, Mazur, is in seventh place, and loses 27 seconds on the run-in. Puccio gets eighth place, while Wolf gets ninth and Rowsell tenth.

The pack is lead in 1’42” down on Ghyllebert’s time by Capecchi.
