Giro del Capo - Stage 1

Welcome to this season's Giro del Capo.

Our first stage is a mainly flat race, with a few King of the Mountains points for grabs for the likely breakaway.

But at the first mountain prime, only J.Claes is off the front, so he will win the first with his immense climbing prowess.

Moinard takes 2nd spot over Zirbel

Doi, who carried on after the KoM prime, manages to catch Claes, but there is only a 1 minute 20 gap back to the peloton.

Alas, it was not to be the breakaway's day today, as Millar leads at the catch.

For the second KoM prime, Moinard manages to take it over Seledkov and Ball.

But with the final KoM just 5km after the middle one, Moinard can't hold on to win that one too. Sicard takes it over Ben Nasser, whilst Moinard does manage to hold onto 3rd spot. Will that give him the jersey tomorrow?

But wait... perhaps Ben Nasser wasn't after those points after all? He's got himself a gap and is trying to keep it over Abal.

But Abal does catch him, at which point they refuse to work together.

Which seems a waste, as, with 7km to go, they have a small 28 second gap. They're risking a potential stage win.

And Konovolavas does a stirling job for El-Al though, and manages to drag back the two by himself. So in comes the question of who is near the front who can sprint.

The answer? No one. Mark McNally leads it all into 2.5km to go, and there are literally no sprinters around.

Whats this?! We can't believe this! Moinard has recovered enough from his previous efforts to pop through on the inside! Surely he can't win a sprinters stage with his lack of skill?

And no. He fades away quickly, and with 500m to go, it's just a three horse race. Peterson vs Augustyn vs Laverde Jimenez.

And John-Lee is quick to place his grasp firmly on the race as he lunges his bike forward over the final 10m and takes the stage win! A very nice lead out from his team mate earlier on gave him the acceleration over those final few metres.

And who took 2nd though? That was a much closer affair.

A couple of riders also took a spill in the final kilometers. Yamaha paid the most for being too close a team.
