Atapuma could make big steps in the KoM competition, currently lieing in 7th place, 31 points down. Two of the break meanwhile are just hoping for something positive out of the race - Kirsch and Teklehaimanot both suffered injuries earlier in the race.

But on the first Cat 2 climb Atapuma does not attack for points, and only crosses 4th.

Gomez Marchante motioned to follow, but only the Portugese rider went clear. He would catch the breakaway on the Cat 1 climb.

When it comes to the top, Gomez Marchante of course attacks. 16 points takes him to 58, only 10 off the lead.

Riccardo Ricco crashes and abandons the race. Awful luck, that is not fair at all.

Attacks start near the top of the Cat 2 climb in the peloton, with Rujano, Cunego and Pluchkin.

Gomez Marchante kept clear of the rest of the breakaway and holds a minute lead at the top of this climb. 10 points here and he is now tied with Ben Nasser.

Samwel, Caruso and Atapuma are next over - again Atapuma managing to score as few points as he can get away with.

3'45 later, a group of 10 has formed: Fothen, Pluchkin, Madrazo, Martin, Anton, Rujano, Alarcon, Cunego, Trofimov and Sella.

Nibali is not amongst them, which means when he relays on the descent, it all comes back together. The pace slows and the gap to Gomez Marchante widens to 5 minutes.

Gomez Marchante is going to hold on though. A roar of delight as he secures his 2nd consecutive stage win, and a commanding lead in the King of the Mountains competition. What a turn around for Rothaus!
