Stage 17 is the last hill stage of the race, and could be critical for Cunego. After Stage 15, Pluchkin will now fancy his chances of gaining time on the two remaining Mountains stages, plus the TT. The Italian may lead by over a minute, but that is not safe.
With Lotto on reduced numbers, going in the break could also be a good move. But we only get a breakaway of one rider. Ignatenko
He of course wins the first climb, but there is a lot of interest in the 4 and 2 points available for 2nd and 3rd.
The order over the top is:
Brambilla
Samwel
Gomez Marchante
Popovych
Caruso
Paterski
Ben Nasser
Ignatiev
Brambilla drops back to the peloton, but the rest keep going. Samwel in particular, as he crosses the gap to Ignatenko.
The rest follow in a chasing group, where Brambilla has returned - he followed an attack by the other Caruso, clearly feeling indecisive about tactics for the stage.
Onto the big Cat 2 and we get an indication that perhaps calling this a hill stage was misleading. First Ignatiev, then Paterski, then Ben Nasser and Damiano Caruso are dropped by those with better Mountain stats.
The other 4 catch up with Samwel and Ignatenko before the top, and then we see Brambilla and Gomez Marchante attack for the points.
Once again Brambilla lacks conviction, and will eventually only take 4th over the summit after halting his attacking. Gomez Marchante crosses first with a small lead.
Both Gomez Marchante and Brambilla will end the stage on 42 KoM points, joint 4th with Anton, 26 behind Ben Nasser - the Tunisian unable to score today, despite his best efforts.
Gomez Marchante keeps pushing downhill, and Popovych has spotted the danger. He attacks across the gap.
Brambilla and Ignatenko are next, ahead of Gianpaolo Caruso and Samwel. Initially the gap is small, but starts to widen up to 45 seconds with Ignatenko unable to provide much support for Brambilla.
It is clear that this is going to be a stage win as with 14km to go Popovych and Gomez Marchante are some 5 minutes clear of the peloton. Only Lewis, Moschella and Bauer from Lotto have relayed all day.
But there is still the small matter of the final climb, and here come the attacks. Ricco first, followed by Pluchkin right away. Denifl, Cunego, Sella and Trofimov in pursuit.
Crash! Wellens loses control round the corner to crash uphill, and this has bad consequences as he takes down Kolesnikov, Fothen and Martin!
A few others go down too, but those are the main names. The team support is all there for Dan Martin, with all bar Dombrowski dropping back. Fothen can only call on Baltazar to help him, but is just out of shot here and can benefit from the work of Pendleton's - the teams classification leaders. But this really is the worst possible time to crash.
After a flurry of attacking, things start to settle down under the 5km to go banner. Ricco, Trofimov, Cunego, Rujano, Sella, Pluchkin and Madrazo are in the first group.
Neither Popovych or Gomez Marchante have attacked each other up the climb. They lead Brambilla by 45 seconds with 3km to go.
The last of Gomez Marchante's 4 Grand Tour stage wins (all at the Vuelta) came in 2009, while Popovych has never won a Grand Tour stage despite finishing 3rd at the 2011 Tour de France. Neither are getting any younger, so what an opportunity this is now.
Meanwhile Denifl, Van den Broeck, Antón and Nibali are trying to close the gap to the group ahead of them.
Rothaus have not had a great race so far, and Gomez Marchante knows this. He wins the first battle by planting himself firmly on the wheel of Popovych.
Popovych isn't going to hand him the win though, and drops his pace. This could backfire, as now Brambilla is rapidly closing on, closing the gap to 20 seconds.
They can't really wait any longer, and now the sprint comes. Who's going to win this one?
It is Jose Angel Gomez Marchante!
Popovych takes 2nd, with Brambilla 3rd. All three will gain GC positions today as well.
Ignatenko will hold on 4th, and with Caruso edging out Samwel for 5th, but the GC riders are not far behind, as you can see. And Cunego has taken a flyer, in a bid to gain time.
The race leader will take 7th on the stage, 2'01 behind Gomez Marchante. But no gap gained on the rest of the group.
Here come Van den Broeck
and Ponzi to lead in the next group at 2'52. This will see Ricco overtake Alarcon for 5th overall.
And finally at 6'14 in come Martin and Fothen. Horrible luck for them today.
Rujano is the big gainer from today, up to 9th from 13th, while Denifl also enters the Top 10. Martin and Fothen slip from 8th and 10th, to 12th and 13th and a deficit that will be hard to make up - particularly for Fothen.
By finishing one position ahead today, Cunego now holds a 1 point lead over Trofimov in that competition. No change in the U25 competition although by finishing 8 minutes down, Wellens 4th place is under threat from Ivanov and Boily. And Pendleton's teams classification lead over Santander is slashed in two, just 6'38 now.
