Two breakaway victories in a row now, as Lotto - Australia Post find themselves with not enough support to chase attackers down. Stage 13 could be more of the same, but the hills are back loaded this time. Trofimov in 2nd, and particularly Bakelants flying high in 5th, could both do with time gains on a stage like this - before the Mountains return.

Ben Nasser for the second day running.

It's a long wait for the first big climb of the day, and with 10 points up for grabs it is the big one for Ben Nasser today. Caruso fights him all the way to the line, but it is first over the top for the Kenya Airways rider. The break leads by 7 minutes, with 60km to go.

Paterski attacks out of the pack to take them. He will lose ground on Ben Nasser, but more points means more chance of some ranking points at the end of the race.

Sella attack!

The pair have attacked together many times in Giro history and they are at it again. Sella started the day in 16th, 9 minutes down, so needs the time - this wasn't necesarily the stage many thought he would go for it though!

There is a scrambled response in the peloton behind, resulting in a group of 15 chasers being formed.

Dombrowski are aso fighting to get back, but the Aker-MOT leader is pushing too hard on the wet descent and crashes!

The group of 15 includes a couple of teammates, and Siutsou and Kolesnikov both work to contain Cunego and Sella, gap holding at 40 seconds at the start of the final climb.

Trouble for Pluchkin? Bakelants has caught up to the group, with Fothen struggling as he tries to do the same.
