Giro d'Italia - Stage 12
roturn
Stage 12 and after a breakaway success yesterday, can we expect more of the same today?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-1.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Paterski gave Vesuvio a first reason to cheer all race by taking the KoM lead

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-2.jpg

But he is under pressure today as up in the break is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser, and 10 points from the first climb takes the Tunisian to within 4 points of Paterski.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-3.jpg

Also in the break are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Deignan, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Prevar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Zingle, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Meyer and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Kuznetsov.

In the pack, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Kwiatkowski suffered a 2nd crash in two days

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-4.jpg

As with yesterday, Lotto-Australia Post led the peloton all day. But today, at 28km to go, we see the sprinters teams hit the front. Bouygeus, Aker, Pokerstars and Metinvest. The break leads by 5 minutes, as we are about to hit the 2nd categorised climb of the day.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser takes the 6 points for 1st, and that gives him the King of the Mountains lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-6.jpg

The peloton have cut the gap to 3'50, but more importantly, it has been shredded all over the place with that high pace on the climb. Only 34 left in the front group.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-7.jpg

17 are close behind, led by Metinvest - including Popovych - after i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Hoffman just got distanced. Two riders from the Top 10 GC are in there: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bakelants and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski, as well as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato.

There is over a minute back to the next group. Included in there are the likes of Boily, Kolesnikov, Kwiatkowski, Herrada, Dees, Kratochvila, Samwel and Gomez Marchante.

Aker-Mot are driving the peloton hard, but that first group of 17 are able to regain contact. The gap is down to 3 minutes.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-8.jpg

At 10km to go it has tumbled to 2 minutes. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Deignan has already made one attempt to go clear, and now tries again with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Zingle.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-9.jpg

They aren't going to get a gap, but it does look like the group are going to decide victory, as it has been left to only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón to try to chase it down for Impey.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-10.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Deignan tries again, and may have a gap this time.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-11.jpg

But no, Ben Nasser in particular is chasing hard and Deignan is caught once again.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Meyer strikes with 5km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-12.jpg

He is still clear by the time that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser starts to sprint. Lined up behind are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Prevar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Zingle and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Kuznetsov. The Russian is the fastest sprinter, but the weakest climber, which may mean he is more tired. It was win or bust for Deignan, as after his attempts to attack, he is since been dropped.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser surges up towards Meyer, with 1km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-14.jpg

But the Australian has saved his kick, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Travis Meyer wins the stage!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-15.jpg

2nd for Ben Nasser, while Prevar holds off Zingle and Kuznetsov for 3rd.

In the sprint of the peloton, Impey, Roelandts, Hoffman and Degenkolb lead the way.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-16.jpg

But it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi who comes through for 6th place, from Pozzato and Reimer. Deignan having been caught before the end.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-sml-17.jpg

The gaps opened up behind. The peloton were 1'09 behind the break, and 4'27 behind the break was a group with the likes of Kolesnikov, Boily and Gomez Marchante.

Another 45 seconds for the group with Costagli, Kwiatkowski and Samwel - the Kenyan losing much of what he gained yesterday.

While after another day of suffering out the back alone, an injured i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Allonca today was put out of his misery. He missed the time limit and is out of the race.

Dombrowski's U25 lead opens up with Boily and Kwiatkowski losing time - although Scarponi managed to stay in the front group. Festina's Teams lead is also under threat with only Ricco making the front group, Pendleton's slashing the gap there.
