Stage 9 is quite bizarre, in that there are lots of hills and none of them are categorised.

The entire Lotto-Cervelo team lead the peloton. At the sprint at 33km to go, the gap is 4'15.

He is still in the peloton when he gets going, but 2.6km separates the front and back of the group. With such a spread, it is liable to split if he doesn't recover quick.

Ricco is feeling the most pressure, and leading the chase of the peloton. Pluchkin instead has Kwiatkowski up there.

This might just be a battle for time gaps though. 10km to go and they are 2 minutes behind the front of the race.

Arguably the weakest of the breakaway is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Bono, but he has attacked and got himself a 25 second lead.

Gastauer and Ben Nasser could not keep up with the drive of Bakelants, Trofimov and Ponzi.

I don't say Cunego there, because even though he stands the most to gain by gapping Pluchkin, the sneaky Italian is not putting in any relays. But even without Cunego's help, the gap is growing, nearly 50 seconds now.

There are some attempts to attack from the peloton - the likes of Ricco, Martin and Alarcon. They just don't have the impetus to get away, it seems.

The break hits the last climb of Monte Santa Marie, and this is where their legs start to burn after all day out front. The steep 13% gradient puts them at almost a standstill.

Meanwhile the gap behind is balooning up, with no urgency there. It's unbelievable to watch.

Bakelandts and Ponzi lacked the firepower to really challenge in the final kilometre.

That is a net gain of 1'59 for Cunego and Trofimov on their rivals. Pluchkin goes from 3 seconds down to 2'02 down - much harder to make up, even with the remaining time trials. And could Trofimov finally buck his usual trend of falling down the rankings in the second half of a Grand Tour, and actually take a podium spot?
