Stage 7 takes a long and hilly road to Chieti. Another gruelling day on the cards!

So that's chance for a 3rd Good Energy rider to pick up a good haul of King of the Mountains points.

There were quite a lot of crashes in the mid section of the stage, including Villella, Afonso and Pantino Gomez. And this picture rather sums up Vesuvio's torrid Giro to date. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Shikai is just recovering from a crash, and now Merino Criado goes down too. The team having already seen young climbers Kirsch and Galta, their best alongside Shikai, injured after Stage 2.

The tough learning curve will continue as Shikai turns out to be injured from this, and will start to tumble further down the standings. Villella was also badly hurt today, and would finish last, just behind Teklehaimanot, suffering from a crash yesterday,

Up at the front the breakaway shared the 5 climbs on route but despite having the opportunity to, have failed to usurp Dombrowski's 29. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Lutsenko is close on 28, while Caruso has 24, and Zingle 20.

There's still points for the final climb and at that 5th climb, with 17km to go, they still lead the race. But the action is on behind.

Then a move from Trofimov, Pluchkin, Cunego, Ricco and Bakelandts.

A scrappy 10 kilometres followed, with various additional riders trying to attack away from the peloton. From GC riders like Madrazo, to stage hunters like Ponzi and Gastauer. None made it away.

In the mean time, the break still led the race, with Trofimov, Pluchkin, Cunego, Ricco, Bakelants and Samwel in pursuit.

And what's more, with Trofimov 2nd and Bakelandts 3rd, the time bonuses put Cunego into the Maglia Rosa. Incredibly the pattern of the Maglia Rosa changing hands every stage has continued once again. Pluchkin took 5th behind Ricco.

Caruso, Lutsenko and Zingle held on for some ranking points, before Sella, Rujano and Martin led in the peloton.

It is yet more time lost to Cunego, Pluchkin, Trofimov and Ricco though. 45 seconds this time. This was also a blow for Ponzi's Points classification hopes today.

The biggest surprise today though was to see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Gomez Marchante roll in 7 minutes down. Not sure how he got dropped, other than that he must have been in a group that was already 2 minutes down with 40km to go.
