Stage 6 sees the 2nd Mountain stage. Nothing happened on the first, but something should happen here.

Trofimov taking the race lead from Ponzi was not ideal for many, who hope to gain back time on the Russian today, but it may have been good news for Good Energy. It grants them the freedom to go in the breakaway.

He wins the first two KoM climbs from a break of 5. It looks like Good Energy may be able to keep the competition lead in-team.

They catch the break and head towards the summit. Rabottini makes the first move, but the American champion is too strong. He crosses 1st to take the lead of the competition, with Wellens edging through for 2nd on the climb.

Dan Martin is first to spot the mistake and goes charging off the front as soon as he can. The problem is that already that group of 5 has a minute on the peloton, and Cunego is further ahead. He has linked up with Wellens - with only Dombrowski left ahead.

Pluchkin goes on the attack again, in a move that almost takes him up to Cunego. Ricco, Alarcon and Trofimov wait a little before responding - but Madrazo doesnt respond. The Spaniard is under pressure.

The front two groups merge on the descent. Still with a healthy 45 seconds on the race leader and Madrazo.

45 seconds later, Nibali and Fothen have caught Martin and Van den Broeck. That is largely thanks to Nibali, who now tries to leave the other 3 behind.

Ricco secures 2nd while Pluchkin does return to the race lead with 3rd - although his advantage on Cunego is cut to 17 seconds. It's a good day for the pure climbers too - Alarcon in 4th, and the future Alarcon, Dombrowski, in 5th. What a race so far for the American, who now leads the King of the Mountains and Under 25 classifications.

Trofimov sprints in 55 seconds down, ahead of Madrazo. For Madrazo to already be 3 minutes down is really not what was expected at this stage.

Bakelandts raises a few eyebrows as he leads in the next group at 3'43, alongside Gomez Marchante, Brambilla and Rujano - the Venezuelan finally woke up on the descent.

Ponzi led in the 'peloton' at 5'45.

With Dombrowski and Martin both flying high in the Top 6 GC, Pendleton's take over the Teams classification lead. Trofimov now leads Ponzi by 20 in the Points competition.
