Giro d'Italia - Stage 3
SportingNonsense
Stage 3 and the first mountain stage - and no less a climb than Mt. Etna!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-1.jpg

The question on everybody's lips is anybody injured from the crashes yesterday? The first answer is not i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ignatiev. The Russian continues to leave his mark on the race, by setting off in a two man breakaway with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Christensen.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-2.jpg

Ignatiev won the intermediate sprint to take a provisional lead in the Points competition, meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato picked up two points for 3rd from the peloton.

We begin the long Etna climb with Ignatiev and Christensen only 2'30 ahead. There is an early move from 4 riders: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Mestre, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Scarponi and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Frank.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-3.jpg

Dombrowski is climbing strongest and catches up to Ignatiev and Christensen first - at that stage a minute ahead of the other 3 attackers. The American trades relays with them, allowing that gap to slowly close.

Christensen is the first to drop, and then Ignatiev too - as the 3 chasers close up on the American champion.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-4.jpg

But even though they are close, they just can't bridge the gap. Finally doing so with 2.3km to go.

But then the group all attacks each other for the KoM points and Dombrowski is strongest. But he is complacent near the top and a late surge sees i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Scarponi secure the points. This being a Cat 1 climb compared to Cat 2 yesterday, should see Scarponi into the jersey.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-5.jpg

Festina lead the peloton over the top. Nobody tried any moves, and they trail the leaders by 3 minutes. Clearly Ricco is feeling fine - or are they simply setting a pace that he can handle, to help him recover?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-6.jpg

The peloton is 65 strong. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Kirsch and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Rabottini are two names who appear to be injured and struggling, as they should have made the cut.

Right at the back of the group is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Samwel. He didn't crash yesterday, but is having a bad day today. It is not good news to see him at the back with a long descent to come, because he is an awful descender, the worst in the field.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-7.jpg

Speaking of poor bike handlers. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ignatiev crashes again! Luckily taking nobody with him this time.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-8.jpg

At the other end of the scale, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Scarponi is the best descender in the race. Perfect stage for him to be clear, with a stage win surely up for grabs. Mestre got dropped in the KoM fight, and now Zahner can't keep up either.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Samwel is dropped from the peloton, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Antón seen as the next shaky looking descender at the back of the group.

At 15km to go, Dombrowski and Scarponi lead by 1 minute on Zahner and Mestre, and 2'30 on the peloton. Not only is the stage win up for grabs, but a possible race lead too!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-10.jpg

That gap does come down though, and into the final 4km it is clear that a stage is the best they will get.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-11.jpg

Zahner and Mestre are both caught, opening up the prospect of bonus seconds for the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-12.jpg

Now, the final kilometre turned out to be narrow roads. I did not fancy redoing the stage, so any time splits that may occur in the peloton will be neutralised.

Narrow roads can't influence the stage win fight. Dombrowski opens the sprint.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-13.jpg

He seems stronger, but then Scarponi starts to come back at him. Two in a row for Good Energy?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-14.jpg

The San Marino rider cannot make it back up though. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Joseph Dombrowski takes his first Grand Tour stage win! A bright future ahead of him, it is unlikely to be his last.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-15.jpg

There were a few KoM points available on the line, but not enough to stop Scarponi picking up that consolation prize.

The fight for 3rd is a battle for the maglia rosa. 6 seconds separates Trofimov and Pluchkin, with an 8 second bonus up for grabs. They fight it out up this kilometre long climb, and it is Pluchkin who is strongest.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-etn-16.jpg

Trofimov does keep the points jersey, while Kwiatkowski clung onto the U25 jersey - 2 seconds ahead of Dombrowski.

The big loser today is Samwel, who lost over 3 minutes on the peloton on that descent.
