Giro d'Italia - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
The Sicilian opening to the Giro certainly isn't hanging around on hitting the hard terrain. But then, this race is short on easy stages as a whole. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ignatiev will feel he can defend his jersey today, but it won't be easy with some top puncheurs in the field:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bakelants
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Cunego
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Gastauer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ricco
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ben Nasser
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png McCarthy

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-1.jpg

Thurau, Polnicky, Maaskant, Kuznetsov, Leezer and Pichon were the first to attack, but they were eagerly chased. It took the climb to really establish a group, by which time not only had he been chased down, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Thurau had suffered the ignominy of being the first crasher of the race.

The three who made the move that stuck were i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Rybakov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Pichon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Leezer. This was the order which they crossed the only KoM summit of the day - so that jersey is going to Tinkoff.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-2.jpg

At one point on the climb, the entire ING Pro Cycling team were dropped - supporting their weak climbing sprinter i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Kip. Lucky for them that it came back together again on the descent.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Leezer won the intermediate sprint on route, while the likes of Metinvest, Lotto Cervelo and Tinkoff controlled the pace. Rybakov has earnt his goal of the day, so clearly Tinkoff shifted their priorities to Trofimov. Rybakov does still relay up front though.

An interesting move came at 27km to go: attack from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bakelants, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Gastauer. They timed it badly though, right before a descent, and it got nowhere.

There's still the final climb to come, but all is not lost for the break. They still hold 2 minutes approaching 14km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-3.jpg

A killer stint on the front by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ghisalberti quickly cuts that down to 1'20 a couple of km later.

And at 10km to go, climb beginning, Bakelandts and Trofimov attack again. This time joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-4.jpg

They get a gap of 30 seconds, but the peloton is stringing out behind, at the pace of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Kwiatkowski. Lotto and Santander also in the relay train - and that is Ignatiev high up in 4th wheel.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-5.jpg

Still the breakaway leads by 40 seconds, now at 5km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-6.jpg

Maglia rosa down!! Crash for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ignatiev.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Sella and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Madrazo follow him down!!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-8.jpg

Oh no, it's chaos here. As first down, Ignatiev is also first up. But having been right at the front of the peloton it is now a road block behind him.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-9.jpg

Bodies everywhere! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ricco has crashed too, and assesses the scene as he picks himself up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Nibali is somewhere underneath him. Other big name fallers are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Fothen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Rujano, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Brambilla and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Degenkolb. But it seems like half the peloton is involved at least.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-10.jpg

The race can't wait.

At 4km to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Rybakov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Pichon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Leezer lead by 30 seconds on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bakelants, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-11.jpg

A group of just 11 come 40 seconds later.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Impey
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Chérel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Cunego
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Vermeltfoort
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Martin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Grivko
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Kwiatkowski
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Pluchkin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Reimer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato

Whatever remains of the peloton is another 30 seconds later. Many avoided the crash, but couldnt help but be hindered by it.

But Cunego is attacking now, Reimer following shortly after.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-12.jpg

Nearing 2km to go and the break are about to be caught by the lead puncheurs, who in turn are about to be joined by Cunego.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-13.jpg

Out of the tunnel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Pichon opens the sprint. They still lead but can they hold off Bakelandts, Ponzi, Trofimov and Cunego now?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Reimer could not quite get across, and now has i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato hot on his wheels.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-15.jpg

The scramble behind is led by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Gastauer, who attacked just before the sprint, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Roelandts. Also near the front of the peloton are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Van den Broeck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Teklehaimanot, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Denifl, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Stallaert, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Siutsou and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dombrowski.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-16.jpg

Back to the front though, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi has delivered a devastating kick, looking for a 2nd career Giro stage win. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Leezer is putting up a hell of a fight, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov is right there too.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-17.jpg

This was a perfect stage for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Simone Ponzi though, and he takes the win!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-18.jpg

A fantastic 2nd for Leezer, while 3rd for Trofimov will put him in the race lead - whatever the gaps may be behind.

And what gaps will there be? Rybakov in 4th was fairly close to Trofimov. Pozzato's sprint for 8th also closed the gap to Pichon at the back of that group.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-19.jpg

It means that given the same time are everyone from Ponzi, to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Pluchkin and his B&O teammates at the back.

Gastauer and Roelandts bridged to that group in the finale, but the peloton lacked sprinting firepower, and though little i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Alarcon sprinted his heart out infront of Denifl, Van den Broeck and Anton, he could not stop a gap of 1'11 being registered.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/g-mca-20.jpg

You can see that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Ignatiev already managed to charge up to the front of the peloton, and with the pack being strung out in a long line, all major names who crashed are in this group - so their loss is limited to 1'11. It's never good to crash, but it is not often you crash so close to the end, and lose so little.

It is also worth nothing that the unmentioned team leaders of Gomez Marchante, Samwel and Popovych did not crash.

Four riders who crashed have had to abandon: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Zahner, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bablidze, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Kreder and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Van der Sande.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Kwiatkowski takes the lead of the young rider's competition from Durbridge, who crashed, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov is ahead in the Points competition as well as race overall. Leezer is 2nd, two points behind, with both Ignatiev and Ponzi a further point away.
