Giro d'Italia - Stage 18
SportingNonsense
Stage 18. 4 stages remain, and 3 of them are flat - this is the first. The points jersey made be out of reach, but there are still stages on offer for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Ben Swift and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati. Currently it is 3-3 in their battle. Could any other sprinter manage to topple them? It would be surprise if Puma or Vesuvio allow a breakaway success. Bennati did have a crash since the last sprint stage - but does not seem to have shown any ill effects on the stages since. He and Swift actually finished alongside each other at the finish line yesterday.

There is a high altitude start to the day, before the eventual finish line in Verona.

5 riders broke clear on the early descent.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dmitriy Gruzdev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Gediminas Bagdonas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Kevin Fouquet
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Brian Vandborg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani

It is actually the first attack of the race for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Bagdonas, but the rest have all given it a go earlier in the race.

A 6th rider looks to cross the gap to join them - and its a real dangerman, breakaway stage winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Taylor Tolleson.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-3.jpg

The Giro does have a history of seeing a rider win 2 stages from breakaways in 1 year - that will be on Tolleson's mind today! But if we are on about links then hows this. Sella picked up his first King of the Mountains points of the race yesterday, and won the stage. Today, his teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Viviani scores his first KoM points by riding over Climb #1 first...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-4.jpg

It's a long way to go though, and what hope does the break really have?

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia got a little bit of help from Puma and Vesuvio during the day, but at 42km to go it is only White on front of the peloton. The gap to the break is 7 minutes.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-5.jpg

Puncture! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Henao! Not good timing...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png König is amongst those to drop back, and they take their team leader safely back to the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-7.jpg

It is just in the nick of time for Milka, as immediately i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars take to the front of the peloton. 28km to go, the break lead by 6'30.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-8.jpg

Already down to 4'13 when the breakaway reach 20km to go. A further fall to 3'28 when the peloton reach that point.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Gruzdev and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Vandborg use the second KoM of the day as a springboard to break the rhythym of the breakaway and attack away.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-10.jpg

They are caught, but the group still leads by 2'12 with 12km to go, they are starting to hold out! As
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Gruzdev sets off again.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-11.jpg

This time the Kazakh gets a gap. Fittingly dressed in orange, he is very much the carrot on a metaphorical stick for the rest of the break. He leads them by 20 seconds as they reach 6km to go. But his gap on the peloton is still at 1'40!!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-12.jpg

The peloton seemed to assume they would easily chase down the break today, no matter how late they left it. But now they are faltering, not at all making the impact they need to.

This is highlighted by the fact that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Diego Ulissi is able to attack clear!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-13.jpg

The sprint trains emerge, but they are going to need an almight effort now. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden follows the leading Pokerstars train, while following Vesuvio are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Richeze, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Forero and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-14.jpg

The breakaway are already sprinting, and it may just be for victory here. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Taylor Tolleson on his way to a 2nd stage victory? He is so confident that he is leading it out, as the gap to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Gruzdev is closed.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Tolleson takes the lead. But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Viviani has his wheel, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Bagdonas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Fouquet and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Vandborg are bunching up behind him.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-16.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Enrico Gasparotto and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png John Degenkolb start the sprint, but it doesnt feel urgent enough. The sprinters need to go NOW.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-17.jpg

The break are into the final kilometre. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani has jumped out from Tolleson and taken the lead. The American's speed evaporating just as fast as his previous confidence.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Diego Ulissi is still clear of the peloton as we see a similar pattern in the sprint. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars in a bit of a mess, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden about to go early, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati biding their time. Not going to be a stage win today though, the chasing domestiques have messed it up.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-19.jpg

Instead the victory is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani's! Two in a row for Simply Red Bull, just when their manager was fearing this was not going to be their race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-20.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Gediminas Bagdonas is going to come away with a false impression of Grand Tour breakaways as he takes a 2nd place on his first attempt. Its a podium for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Kevin Fouquet, while poor tactics sends i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Taylor Tolleson to a disappointing 4th.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-21.jpg

5th for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Brian Vandborg, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dmitriy Gruzdev will take 6th.

The battle between i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati is the best we have seen all race, as Swift edges out Bennati by the narrowest possible margin. But the reward is a mere 7th place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/pdltonver-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek takes 9th - so the breakaway has denied him a stage podium. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis completing the Top 10.
