Giro d'Italia - Stage 3
SportingNonsense
The Giro continues to favour the sprinters as Stage 3 takes the race from Selvazzano Dentro into the region of Lombardia, and the city of Mantova. Early form suggests that today will see a 2nd win for either i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift or i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati. They won't be unchallenged, but aside from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs, half the battle for the other sprinters is to even get in a good position.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-1.jpg

The climbs are slowly increasing, with 2 climbs early on the route, which will threaten the King of the Mountains leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Meyer. Their presence of course, makes many all the more eager to get into the breakaway - and some strong puncheurs get themselves involved into the mix, already in the first move of the day.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Jay McCarthy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png William Walker
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Wes Sulzberger
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Alexandr Nepomnyachsniy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren

Caruso is an interesting name to be involved, but it is foolish to make your way into the first move. Koren is also a strong rider, and he is featured again in the second breakaway attempt.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Jay McCarthy
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Nikola Aistrup
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Ramon Sinkeldam
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Kevin Fouquet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Fabio Taborre

And also in the 3rd which follows that!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Kristjan Koren
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Johann Tschopp
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Brian Vandborg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Santo Anza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Matteo Rabottini

The Slovenian is proving keen, as is Kennaugh, to feature in all 3 moves so far.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-25.jpg

But just as active, in another sense, is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Ben Gastauer. The Luxembourger is the spearhead for Vesuvio, chasing down all of these early moves.

Either they don't like Koren, or more likely, are not willing to see a larger group go clear. So will the next move have any luck? This time only 4 are involved:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Santo Anza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Elia Viviani
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Adrian Malori

Italian squad Venchi have been quiet so far, but after this move also fails, they get involved in the action for the first time this stage - sending Sep Vanmarcke clear

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-2.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sep Vanmarcke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Matteo Rabottini
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dmitriy Gruzdev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Grégory Rast
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michal Kwiatkowski

Fellow Italians Wiggle join them with Rabottini, and we have now reached the first climb of the day. Yet still no rest for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-3.jpg

The latter 3 names in that previous move, Rast, Gruzdev and Kwiatkowski, give it one last move. And that's it! Vesuvio did not fancy chasing up the climb and so finally a move has stuck.

The trio attack all the way up the climb, chasing those King of the Mountains points.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-4.jpg

1i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.pngGrégory Rast6

3i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.pngDmitriy Gruzdev2

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Rast is able to secure maximum points on both climbs, to become the new King of the Mountains leader. We have the same order on both climbs, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Gruzdev unable to climb with the other two.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-5.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Janse van Rensburg,i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Malori, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Sulzberger and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Marentes all gave it one last effort to bridge across, but timed their efforts wrong.

In contrast, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Oliver Zaugg struck a new move at the right moment and was able to ride away and up to the breakaway, which will now ride clear over the flat 120km remaining.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-6.jpg

After doing the early work, Vesuvio are able to take a rest as Puma-Sap take sole control through these early stages. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Minard, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bol and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bar are the initial riders, but later on we do see the brief presences of leadout riders i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto on the front!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-7.jpg

At the intermediate sprint, it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Kwiatkowski who takes victory in the break.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-8.jpg

Meanwhile in the peloton, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars has joined Puma in relaying, and there appears to be a bug with this sprint in that 5 positions are listed on the race information screen, with no points or time bonuses for any position.

But this wonderful opportunity for a meaningless 5th place has been taken to heart by some of the sprinters. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest joined the 'big 3' sprinters in wasting energy charging out the front of the pack - with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift being the man to 'win' 5th place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-9.jpg

There's not much else to say now, as the race heads towards the inevitable sprint finish - despite the best efforts of the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-10.jpg

Chasing them down are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Mickaël Delage
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Nick Nuyens
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gianni Meersman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jelle Wallays
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Thomas De Gendt
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Maciej Paterski
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Sébastien Minard
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Nick Ingels
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Welle Jallays
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png David Boucher
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Marcel Kittel

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-11.jpg

And the sprint trains are already poised in place as the catch is made at 10km to go.

A disgraceful piece of riding follows from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Kwiatkowski though, as he shunts i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift to a long way back in the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-12.jpg

In his absence the sprint trains have hit the front. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Meersman leads for Puma, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jallays for Pokerstars and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png De Gendt for Vesuvio, who still remain in place towards the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-13.jpg

After 5 kilometres of fighting through a peloton with various riders blocking the road along the way, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift manages to find his way back up to his leadout train, who have had to lose position in waiting for him. How much energy has the race leader lost though?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-14.jpg

Puma lead with:

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Enrico Gasparotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Thomas Vedel Kvist
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Kobe Vanoverschelde

While Pokerstars have got more of a following:

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Martijn Maaskant
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png John Degenkolb
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Erik Mohs
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Juan Van Heerden
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Gerald Ciolek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Juan José Haedo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Andreas Stauff

And as the sprint is about to begin, a few riders are also able to tag on to the end of Vesuvio's efforts.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Pedro Merino Criado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Steven Caethoven
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Ben Swift
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Juan Pablo Forero
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Allan Davis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Cameron Meyer

But the sprint is now underway as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kvist opens up the action.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-15.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Caethoven is really earning his salary at the moment as he tries to outsprint Kvist, and bring Swift right into play.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-16.jpg

A teammate like that would be very useful for the likes of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rowe and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Vanderbiest who are both positioned a long way back as the race hits the final kilometre.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-17.jpg

Once again, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden has launched early. It got him a podium, and nearly a win, yesterday - can it be as successful today? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Haedo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde are closest at the moment - upset on the cards?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-18.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs finally finds his speed and surges through, but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati is looking strong, and on the far side i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift is putting up a great fight against the odds.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-19.jpg

It is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs vs i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati for the win, but wow, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rowe is flying - look at how much ground he has made up!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-20.jpg

The German had the advantage, but with a sniff of the finish line, Bennati looks for that extra kick once again.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-21.jpg

And i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Daniele Bennati takes the victory!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-22.jpg

A much improved 2nd for Mohs, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift fights hard to take 3rd after the Kwiatkowski treachery. It's a great 4th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde, just beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto pair Stauff and Ciolek. Stauff continuing to surprise in the sprints.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-23.jpg

Only 7th in the end for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rowe, if only he had been better placed. 8th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Forero, 9th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis and just 10th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden - who got his tactics wrong this time.

The day belongs to Daniele Bennati though, and he at last gets to wear the Maglia Rosa. Perhaps only for a day though, with the race's first uphill finish on its way tomorrow.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/selvdmantov-24.jpg

And for once, no splits in the peloton. All finish safely on the same time.
