The race remains in Veneto as Stage 2 takes us more inland towards Padova. Vesuvio-Accumalux stunned everyone with their dominance on Stage 1 and Ben Swift will be keen to continue that, now with the Maglia Rosa on his back. Daniele Bennati will be determined to fight back though, while Erik Mohs needs to justify his team's support. And can the other sprinters manage to get into the mix too? Juan van Heerden looked the most likely to do so on the opening stage.
The attackers are non stop at the start of the day as attempts go away, only to be chased down by the sprinters teams.
First to give it a go were:
Wilson Marentes
Johann Tschopp
Kevin Fouquet
Steven Cummings
Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg
With the incentive of a King of the Mountains jersey on offer, every attacking rider has hopes of making this a lucrative day. Here were those in the 2nd attempt:
Wes Sulzberger
Matteo Rabottini
Nikola Aistrup
Dmitriy Gruzdev
Kevin Fouquet
Johann Tschopp
Ramon Sinkeldam
And then Attempt number 3. Third time lucky?
Fabio Taborre
Taylor Tolleson
Nikola Aistrup
Travis Meyer
Coen Vermeltfoort
Oliver Zaugg
Santo Anza
There's so much interest after Walker embarassed the field yesterday by going on a solo breakaway. Many team managers cannot have been happy about that.
But rather than third time lucky, it is fourth time lucky. And a group of 4 who have been granted permission by the peloton to create a gap that sticks.
Taylor Tolleson
Coen Vermeltfoort
Jesse Sergent
Travis Meyer
And for these 4, attention of course turns to the climb of the day. Who will make it to the top first?
Travis Meyer tested his legs out by having a mini sprint battle with his brother for 20th place yesterday. He lost that one, but is the strongest climber in the break - and it shows. The King of the Mountains jersey is on it's way to Wikipedia for the day.
1 Travis Meyer 6 2 Taylor Tolleson 4 3 Coen Vermeltfoort 2
Perhaps unsurprisingly, nobody is willing to help Vesuvio on the front of the peloton. It's a good plan, as it forces them to use the majority of their team at some point or other - including 2nd overall Caethoven. This might not be great news for Swift's leadout train plans later!
Onto the intermediate sprint, and the break passes through in the same order as they did on the climb. Tolleson would surely have expected to win it, but instead it is another win for Meyer.
We have arrived in Padova for the finishing circuits of the day, and finally Vesuvio receive some support on the front of the peloton.
Sébastien Minard
Mickaël Delage
Welle Jallays
Jelle Wallays
Gianni Meersman
Nick Ingels
Maciej Paterski
Nick Nuyens
Marcel Kittel
Thomas De Gendt
Not that the peloton were ever in much trouble of catching the break, which is done even before the last 20km - Tolleson had been the last rider standing.
A nice simple preparation for the sprint awaits then, with no sign of any late attackers intent on spoiling the party. Under 10 kilometres to go and the sprint trains are already starting to form up.
And when they move forwards to the front inside the closing stage, Team Puma-SAP take the early advantage.
Enrico Gasparotto
Thomas Vedel Kvist
Daniele Bennati
Juan Van Heerden
It looks like Van Heerden has picked a great wheel today, while Vesuvio and Pokerstars have a bit of catching up to do. Many more sprinters are on the back of these trains - perhaps having been too slow to latch onto the Puma express.
Pedro Merino Criado
Steven Caethoven
Ben Swift
Juan Pablo Forero
Romain Vanderbiest
Luke Rowe
Kobe Vanoverschelde
Gerald Ciolek
Juan José Haedo
Martijn Maaskant
John Degenkolb
Erik Mohs
Maximiliano Richeze
Andreas Stauff
Allan Davis
Anthony Lavoine
Gasparotto does a good job at keeping Puma in the lead, and now he peels off for Kvist to take over.
But the Dane isn't as quick as Degenkolb or Caethoven, who close the gap.
Sensing the slower speed, Van Heerden has decided to launch first as the final kilometre approaches.
Great move by the South African and he has a gap under the flamme rouge, but the challenge is being launched behind.
What an incredibly tight sprint we seem to have on our hands here as so many sprinters go line astern! Mohs, Degenkolb, Bennati, Stauff, Swift, Kvist, Caethoven and Vanderbiest.
Juan Van Heerden is holding firm and senses a bit of an upset here, while Vanderbiest is also going well in 2nd.
Here comes the big drive though as Swift and Bennati kick into gear. Is it too late though?
They match each other pedal for pedal, and start to close the gap on Van Heerden.
But the finish line is right there!
It could be a photo finish as they lunge for the line...
Victory for Daniele Bennati! Swift also gets past Van Heerden for 2nd, with the South African having to settle for 3rd.
Vanderbiest and Forero are next, while Rowe has to settle for 6th - it seemed like he might have been stuck in behind Vanderbiest and Forero, thus unable to try to go past them.
Davis takes 7th while Stauff is a surprise as the best Lotto-Cervelo rider. Another disappointment for Mohs in 9th - but at least he made the Top 10 this time, and completing that Top 10 was Vanoverschelde.
The day belongs to Daniele Bennati though as he makes it 1-1 in his battle with Ben Swift. The Brit will keep the Maglia Rosa however.
The stage doesn't end there though. A very large group of riders are only just entering the final kilometre and a gap could well be measured behind the first 60 or so riders.
Boucher crosses the line 63rd. Is a gap going to be awarded to the group behind?
Yes, it is. Bacardi pair Mancuso and Schadlich were in no hurry to cross the line, and a gap of 1'30 is to be awarded. Their team leader Ricco is safe, but that does not apply to all team leaders.
The biggest names to lose out are the same names who almost lost time yesterday. Very bad start to the race for Nibali, Sella, Caruso, Henao Montoya, Kohl, Fothen and Kiserlovski. Coincidentally, most of them seem to be riding alongside each other. They can share their misery at being too incompetent to avoid losing time on the flat.
