Giro d'Italia - Stage 8
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-1.jpg

The start of the second week sees what is at first glance a completely straight-forward stage. Of course, as with everything in this year’s Giro, it isn’t as easy as it first seems. First off, it is almost 214km, but more importantly in the final 3km there is a 1.5km climb that maxes out at 15% which could really upset the sprinters today. As such the favourites list is a very mixed bag, including some puncheurs such as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bacardi.png Ricco, as well as sprinters like i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Guerao. In this sort of rolling terrain, however, the chances for a breakaway win should never be underestimated.

Starting us off today is the Swedish time trial champion i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Viktor Renäng.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-2.jpg

Almost straight away several more riders try to bridge up to him. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Yoann Offredo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Bradley Wiggins
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Juan Esteban Arango
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Sten Stenersen

The peleton is clearly not happy with the makeup of this group, because several teams join together to chase this down pretty quickly. They are caught fairly quickly, so a new wave of attacks start. Almost straight away a new quartet try to escape the peleton. Their names are:
Stage 3 breakaway man i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Hernâni Broco
Spanish time trialist i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Imanol Erviti
Former mountain jersey i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Rafaâ Chtioui
and Continental Tour sprinter i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Robert Förster

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-3.jpg

Just as the rain starts to come down slowly, creating a slight slickness on the roads, two more riders bridge up to the lead group. They are our earlier aggressor i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Viktor Renäng as well as stage 5 escapee i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/jackwolfskin.png Benoît Vaugrenard. These two easily get up to the leaders to create an escape group of 6. The peleton is much more satisfied with these riders and they thus form our break of the day.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-4.jpg

The trend of slightly rainy days causing crashes continues, as Pendleton’s domestique and Chinese national champion i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Jianhua Ji comes off his bike. He gets back in without difficulties, however.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-5.jpg

There is very little of interest out on course today, with no mountain points and only one sprint towards the end of the stage. This means that not a great deal happens for quite some time. Lots of team are sharing the work, which is not surprising given the number of riders who are tipped as potential winners today. The gap gets out to a maximum of 8’55” before a few teams really set themselves to working hard. Those teams are Wikipedia, who are working for stage 4 winner i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthew Goss, Wiggle, who are working for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Simone Ponzi or stage 5 winner i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Marcello Pavarin and Festina, who will be hoping that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Diego Ulissi can make up for their immensely unlucky Giro.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-6.jpg

The intermediate sprint comes with 32km remaining. None of the breakaway riders are particularly interested, however, which is not surprising given how far back in GC they are. Vaugrenard leads the group over, ahead of Chtioui and then Förster. The pack is lead under the prime by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Ramunas Navardauskas, just 2’39” behind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-7.jpg

With the peleton growing fairly complacent, two riders see an opportunity. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Del Nero and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Reckweg attack almost right under the banner. Del Nero is clearly trying to launch a bit of a surprise to support Guerao today and B&O don’t really have anyone who can win today so they have clearly decided that this is their best chance.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-8.jpg

The chasers start out strong but they struggle to bridge all the way up to the break. Finally, with 16.5km remaining they manage it. The problem is that the Wiggle and Wikipedia-led peleton has managed to reduce the advantage to just 49”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-9.jpg

Indeed the pace remains so high that with 12.3km remaining everyone has been brought back into the fold. It looks like the day’s favourites are going to get a chance to duke it out on the hill after all.

Of course, some people have other ideas. With just under 8km remaining, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Del Nero and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Reckweg decide to give it another go.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-10.jpg

They are clearly hurting from their earlier exertions, however, because Reckweg just can’t get away and Del Nero only manages to get a 10” gap.

B&O are determined to make an attack stick, however, and as such under the 5km to go banner, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Steven Kruijswijk puts in a big dig. He has been in two breaks so far this Giro and he is clearly here to ride aggressively.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-11.jpg

He instantly burns right past Del Nero, who cracks and slips back into the pack. With 3km to go the climb begins. Kruijswijk has a 20” gap over the peleton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-12.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Marcello Pavarin leads the peleton up the start of the narrow roads of the climb.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-13.jpg

Anyone who isn’t in the front handful of riders is going to struggle to place today, and it is clear that Wiggle and Festina have placed their riders perfectly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-14.jpg

The order from front to back in the pack is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Pavarin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Goddaert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Bernaudeau
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Rowe
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Ulissi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Ponzi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Grillo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Guerao
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss

Pavarin starts to get a gap on the other bunch and is close to getting up to Kruijswijk. Ulissi comes past his domestiques and is third wheel up the hill.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-15.jpg

He can’t close down the gap fast enough, however, so Pavarin has a small gap on the peleton but is still a few bike lengths behind Kruiswijk.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-16.jpg

Behind these two Ulissi is starting to fade a little bit, but Ponzi has clearly benefited from Pavarin’s attack and chooses 700m to go to put on his own burst of speed. He comes past Ulissi into third place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-17.jpg

With 300m to go Pavarin has closed a little bit of the gap but not enough. Ponzi, however, is absolutely surging!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-18.jpg

100m remaining and he is almost level. Can he do this?!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-19.jpg

And Ponzi gets the stage win by half a wheel length!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-20.jpg

He has to wait until well past the line to raise his arms, but he has earned it. Kruijswijk looks angry at coming so close. Pavarin should be happy with third. Once again Wiggle have raced a hilly stage to absolute perfection.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro8-21.jpg

Guerao and Goss show why so many people tipped the sprinters by coming in 4th and 5th respectively. Ulissi will be disappointed with 6th, which is probably due to his crash on stage 4. Grillo is in 7th and Rowe makes it another Wiggle rider in the top 10 by taking 8th. Hoffman and Weylandt round out the top 10.

The first 179 riders all get the same time today, so the GC battle and the jerseys don’t really change. It should be a different story tomorrow, however, where the riders face Mount Etna not once, but twice. The GC will no doubt really take shape tomorrow.
