Plan de Corenes Individual Time Trial – 12.9kms
Sella managed to hold off Cunego in the last stages showdown on Zoncalon, he managed to claw his way onto Cunego’s wheel particularly in the last 2.5 km. Today though he is on his own, going up a mountain which gets ridiculously steep near the top. Do not expect the same names who dominated the opening Time Trial to be on the leaderboard today. The possible exception is Michael Rogers who can climb pretty well, but its pure climbing ability that counts today.
The other GC favourites will now feel as if they are squabbling for the minor placings, today is an important day for riders like Nibali, Pozzovivo, Henao Montoyo, Devolder, Castano etc. They can take important time out of other riders and they know here there will be no tactics its just get up this mountain as quickly as you can.
Other riders will be looking to simply ride up it in a respectable time, one such rider is current points leader Luke Rowe of Wiggle.
What a tour for the young Brit – today he will not be collecting more points though
There are three checks on the route the first is pretty useless at 4km, the second at 7km gives us a better idea but the final check following the nasty final 4.5 km of track will give us of course our total picture. Luke took just under 18 minutes to ride the first 7km and by the end finished in 36.33. So how much can a climber expect to take out of a rider like Luke Rowe. Suaza (Carmuese) should give us a rough idea...
The Carmuese climber in his element here
Carmuese have struggled to make any sort of inpact at the Giro, their mountain goats are finding the parcours difficult to contend with. Suaza should be happier here though and at 7km his time is close to 17 minutes dead, and he comes close to breaking 35 minutes at the end. This sets a tough benchmark, the Columbians are having a field day here.
Cafe du Columbia’s Duarte goes well here
The Columbian is not that well placed on GC, but this is a good chance to show himself. Indeed he does setting a very strong 16.41 at the 7km check and finishing with comfortably the best time at this point with 34.21. This is going to be tough to beat, riders like Rogers and Keizer can do no better.
Not a TT that Rogers will enjoy – just grit your teeth Michael
Rogers could not even beat Suaza’s time and Keizer not a bad climber did okay bettering Suaza’s time but nowhere near as good as Duarte. The first ‘big gun’ to go really well was Benat Intxausti.
Intxausti makes a really good fist of this
What a bad day the Spaniard had on stage 11, you get the feeling that much like Cunego early on he has been troubled by that since. This rider has wonderful potential and surely will be one to watch in the Vuelta in this and future years. He shows his strength going 26 seconds faster than Duarte at the 7km check and finishing in an amazing 33.33 at the end. Not sure anyone can go much quicker than that! The other GC favourites will not want to let the youngster back in the game here and at the very least will try and limit their losses. Sony’s Marzano is in this category...
Marzano the ‘fifth’ Italian contender defends his GC position
His 7km check is good just 10 seconds slower than the speeding Intxausti, he does seem to struggle slightly at the end though. The Italian just squeaks inside of 34 minutes – only the second rider to do so at that stage. There is plenty of support for the Italian riders, though admittedly we are in borderlands here, it suits the characteristics of their best. Here’s Pozzovivo...
High Energy for this diesel powered man
The Italian matches Marzano’s decent split time for 7km, he tries to measure himself in the horrible last sections and manages to set a time of 33.54. Its five seconds faster than Marzano, but 21 seconds down on Intxausti showing that perhaps its not a super day for Pozzovivo. Vicenzo Nibali the Italian TT champ and top three up Zoncalon should be perfect for this.
Nibali wearing the mountains jersey
He comes through the 7km check 2 seconds slower than Pozzovivo and Marzano, clearly not going to match Intxausti. He, like Pozzovivo, has measured his approach and tries hard to make up time on the tough last section. His time of 33.55 is okay but not perhaps as groundbreaking as he would hope, but its okay one second slower than Pozzovivo. Still Nibali will not feel that good about things as this happened during his run.
Nibali knows he will be much slower than at least one rider
Its Cunego and he really has the bit between his teeth now... he is targeting this man and wants him out of a pink jersey.
Sella tries to defend his jersey again
The pink jersey has become a nice fit for Sella, who but for a bad last 20km on the Monte Grappa stage could not have done much more at the moment. Again today he is doing an excellent rider. The pink jersey even gets inside Intxausti’s inhuman 16.14 time for 7km by setting 16.11. Of course Cunego having overtaken Nibali is on a stormer. His time at 7km is an unbelievable 15.36, he finished with a time of 32.22 fully... 1.11 faster than Intxausti.
Cunego shows his 5 time Giro champion pedigree
So what about Sella he needed to finish within 40 seconds of Cunego, he held himself together to finish second on the stage but only one second faster than Intxausti. It means that Cunego can go from his mainly pink jersey to a fully pink one now. I suppose the champ has arrived!
