Up north in Ireland, the third stage of the inaugural FBD Eire Tour sends us from Carrick On Shannon to Oughterard on pretty flat 163 kilometres.
Sprinters have to be careful though, as the steep hill a little more than 20 km before the finish provides a springboard for stronger riders as well as a hard obstacle for anyone not familiar with the road map today.
The first effort comes from Paul Martens, and he is soon followed by 6 more.
Moreno
Mortensen
Locatelli
Sagan
Curfs
Gilanipoor
And chasing them are Kadri, Honorio Machado, Margaliot and Kojcan
These 11 riders are too much for many DS, and they're quickly brought back.
Listing them wasn't for no use though, as we see the exact same riders attacking again, this time even including Erviti as well.
Right as they settle in front, we can see Martens in the background, unlucky to puncture in this situation. Fouquet comes from behind and they team up in the chase.
We are already racing for two hours, and now everyone's together up front.
Fouquet, Mortensen
Martens
Moreno, Erviti
Locatelli
Sagan
Curfs
Gilanipoor
Kadri
Honorio Machado
Margaliot
Kojcan
The peloton, led by Wiggle, UBS and Nestle right now, passes the exact same spot 6:45 later.
The break finally approaches the first point of interest on this stage, and it's 10-8-6-4-2 KoM points for a mere kilometre of climbing! Kadri with two points so far is the only one in the break being in the classification already.
Positioning seems to be everything here, and Martens has the best chances.
But Machado has the best acceleration and grabs the points atop the hill.
Martens and Locatelli have to be satisfied with less points.
The chase is finally on, and in the flat section between the hills, the bunch can see the break now.
But the gap is big enough for the riders up front to battle for the remaining points and tomorrow's jersey, as the scenic view of the second hill comes in sight.
This time, we have Israeli Margaliot coming through first, and another fine effort by Machado secures him the jersey. Kadri is next.
The peloton is incredibly streched over the top, but luckily, noone worth mentioning falls behind due to the brutal pace.
Marcel Sieberg's desperate try to strenghten the break...
...has no effect, and with 16 km to go, we're set for another bunch sprint.
Today, we have Wikipedia setting up Van Heerden.
Leijman
Rollin
Van Garderen
Van Heerden
Bewley
Boonen
Vanoverschelde
Rowe
Steegmans
The remainders of the breakaway cause chaos in the sprint train...
...but as the sprint starts, we're back to normality. The minor placings changed a bit, and we now have behind Vanoverschelde:
Rowe
Vanderbiest
Richeze
Ventoso
Renshaw
Reynes
Back to normality? Well, nearly! Ben Swift continues his horrendous week, he's too far behind!
Back to the front, and with 1.3k to go, van Garderen still leads out a perfectly positioned Van Heerden.
Less than 1000 metres to the finish line, and finally we see the sprinters accelerating. Boonen, Van Heerden, Bewley and Vanoverschelde are side to side.
The finish stands are in sight now, and the South African still leads!
He fades though...
...and in the end, everyone shakes his head in disbelief again as it's another Boonen show.
Bewley is again the best "human" rider today, Van Heerden can only achieve third place after the awesome work his team did today.
Rowe finishes fast and gets fourth ahead of Vanoverschelde, who is allowed to wear the green jersey on behalf of Boonen for another day.
Swift comes home in an appalling 13th place today.
