Stage 2 doesn't provide many highlights, with the only obstacle being a steadily rising hill in the latter half.
Against common sense, betting on Bakelandts and Ulissi would give you the fewest money back of all riders here. But we can most definately rule out such a scenario!
The first try on this cloudy and cold Irish summer day comes from Jesus Tendero and Wildcard representant Jonathon Clarke.
With only two guys in front, many teams would be unhappy to miss out, and thus we get more attacks.
Sieberg
Bontenackels
Pavarin
Bookwalter
Rodriguez Segarra
This attack settles our BOTD with Sieberg the most prominent name due to his KoM position.
A third place over the only categorized climb today gives him the jersey.
During the next hour of racing, the bunch led by Vesuvio and Nestle take it easy and the gap steadily rises to 7 minutes with 100 kilometres to go.
But that's not all that happens! The rain starts to fall, and there are first victims.
Diggle
Guarnieri
L'Hotellerie
Wallays
Renshaw, Bennett
all go down. The latter group won't make it back to the peloton, and we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see whether anyone got seriously harmed in these crashes.
The break approaches the climb, and the gap is still 5 minutes with slightly more than 60 k to go.
We go over the top, and Sieberg reacts too late to Roriguez Segarra.
Second is Bookwalter, and the Jack Wolfskin rider accelerates well enough to grab third place and with that the KoM jersey.
It's down to 2 minutes going into the last 30 kilometres due to Vesuvio and Nestle.
Bad news for Pendleton's now, as Borut Bozic abandons after a crash.
The future mass sprint finishes probably won't see their jersey in the front rows anymore.
And with less than half an hour of racing left, there is a mass crash!
Luckily, no GC favourite is involved, with the biggest names going down being already gapped Albasini and current King of the Mountains Paterski.
But wait! Not directly affected by the crash, but delayed by the pile-up is Santander hopeful Ventoso!
Some team mates drop back to him, but it'll be quite an achievement for them to get s.t. today.
Back to the front, and the sprint preparation starts. Nestle is caught out heavily by Milka here, it seems!
Honkisz Forero Bewley Reynes Hoffman Boonen Van Heerden Swift Vanoverschelde Richeze Vanderbiest Rowe Granjel Cabrera
Boonen get's his lead-out right just in time for the sprint, though.
Forero starts to sprint, and Bewley has a great chance today!
Vanderbiest challenges the Milka riders early on, and Boonen is slightly boxed in.
And guys who closely watched the last shot see there's something wrong there.
BEN SWIFT CRASHES!
Down with him goes Richeze.
At the front, Boonen finally goes all-in, and Bewley is still stuck behind his team mate.
Coming from a really bad position, the Belgian proves he's one step above the rest of the field here.
Vanoverschelde continues his great form and finishes best-of-the-rest.
Bewley is the fastest finisher, but his lack of attention in the decisive moments has cost him a better finish.
Hoffman makes it a perfect day for Nestle on fourth, with Reynes benefiting of his great positioning.
Davide Vitoria celebrates Boonen's win, but what's behind him? Nothing!
Swift's crash splitted the field horribly.
Jan Bakelandts finishes in the second group together with Ulissi and Rodriguez Oliver, will there be time gaps assigned?
Yes, there are gaps!
Notable puncheurs/baroudeurs gaining time today:
1:19
Boonen
Bewley
0:41
Bakelandts
Ulissi
Rodriguez Oliver
So the bookmakers weren't that wrong this morning.
Bakelandts and Ulissi haven't been favourites for the stage, but now, they are favourites for the overall win.
Several riders abandoned today:
