We're off in Ireland, and the first stage will be one for the sprinters.
Bookmaker favourites are unsurprisingly
Boonen
Bewley
Swift
Not yet out of Dunbonye's sight, and our first attacker in this Tour is
Russell Hampton.
Rarely any team wants to miss out on the first breakaway, and we get counter-attacks from
Sieberg
Cummings
Ford
Fenn
Fouquet
Kadri
Cleaver
The first 5 mentioned above get a gap to the others,
but due to further attacks by
Rollin
Bennett
Bontenackels
Echarri, Erviti
L'Hotellerie
we get a huge front group.
The peloton, lead by Vesuvio and Milka, can be seen in the background chasing hard to reel them in, but the first mountain sprint will be contested by the breakaway.
It's 6, 4, 2 points atop the 1,2 km long "hill", and they go to Sieberg, Cummings and Kadri.
It has to be remembered that the second KOM prize will award 10 points for the winner, so unless the break still leads there, the German will start tomorrow's stage in his usual jersey.
For some reason, the peloton sat up again and gives the breakaway more than 3 minutes leeway.
The sprint is won by Dominique Rollin in front of Fenn and Sieberg.
Ben Curfs and Mathieu Heijboer close the gap of now 3:30 pretty easily and increase the breakaway to 15 riders.
But we take a quick look behind, and see Vesuvio and Milka frantically chasing again.
It takes a humiliating 25 kilometres to reel in our BOTD, and with 60k to go, the riders at the front are looking at each other in despair.
So surprisingly for all sprinters present, they are able to contest the second intermediate sprint for valuable bonus seconds.
But as the camera focuses on obvious favourite Tom Boonen, we can see they are far from being aware of the green banner rapidly coming nearer!
It takes some luck for them to pass the relaying train, and not everyone manages to do so.
Sam Bewley takes the seconds up for grabs, with Swift and Vanderbiest right behind him. Every second might be crucial, Tom!
Soon after, the bunch starts the last climb of the day. Taking turns at the front are Paterski and Efimkin, which on the one hand might be an indicator of who leads Milka here, but on the other hand it puts the pressure on the sprinters!
Paterski takes the points and therefore the polkadot jersey for tomorrow.
Efimkin, Ponzi, Stalder and Ballan are next, with noone really contesting it.
But far more interesting, there are splits!
12 riders have a small gap, with only Ben Swift benefiting of the situation.
Even loosing contact with the big second group are valuable helpers like
Albasini
Pavarin, Diggle, Caruso.
They will loose 7 minutes today.
The front groups merge again, and with less than 10k to go, we have an interesting situation.
The sprinters all lined up behind Boonen, but he's quite a bit behind his supposed lead-out Hoffman. The speed dropped to incredible 35 km/h.
2,5 km to the line, and still no movement whatsoever!
Boonen seeks slipstream behind Reynes.
Bewley and Swift are in the arguably best position.
We have some movement, but it's not Granjel Cabrera finally going for it under the kite, it's Alessandro Ballan!
Now we get a reaction from the top sprinters, and it's Boonen emerging of a packed front of the peloton.
And despite the disarray in the sprint preparation, Tom Boonen wins.
Ballan saves the second place, and Vanoverschelde grabs the 8 bonus seconds and will be in white tomorrow.
Bewley and Swift, visible as the only riders representing their teams in this picture, finish an abysmal 16th/20th due to the disorganised sprint.
