Some early KoM points open the race, but from there, its mostly flat

Danny Pate takes the first climb, and with 2nd behind Schroder at the other, he is the first KoM leader

In the moves that followed, Frederik Nolf set off on a long solo move, spending 60km clear, by no more than 30 seconds of some chasers. With 30km to go they eventually caught him - Pauriol, Timofeev, Healion, Van Den Eynde, Viviani, Kavsek and Mironov.

But theres a major incident in the peloton! Of the 4 riders PCM has rated as the best team leaders in the race, 3 of them are down on the ground!

Pokerstars' Kluge is forced to abandon - but more importantly for the overall race battle, Bewley, Sinkewitz and Boasson Hagen are all in trouble now. Festina and Auber send a couple of riders back, and B&O try to - although the ones they send back seem to prefer to remain about 30 seconds infront of the crash victims group.

No sympathy in the peloton. The break is caught, and a number of teams are putting the hammer down - to wipe up GC hopes of those big names out the back

The sprint trains come to the fore as we head into the final 10km

On the far left: Holloway > Mohs > Lo Cicero > Docker. On the far right: Richeze, Vanderbiest, Bennati, Corioni, Avelino, Cooke and Castaneda. While inbetween Grillo leads Granjel Cabrera, and Sieberg leads Van Stayen

Also up on the far right is Minard, and as some sprint trains falter, he presses on, with Docker switching over to his teammate. The Lafarge duo then lead off the sprint, as already the challenge seems down to 2 other teams - Sony Ericsson and Jack Wolfskin

Van Stayen and Granjel Cabrera are going to need to make their move before Docker, which the Belgian realises, while Summerhill is the Cafe de Colombia rider up there.

But Docker makes his move, so its an uphill battle now for Van Stayen and Granjel Cabrera

And having taken the first 2 sprint stages of this years Giro, Mitch Docker takes the win and race lead on Stage 1 here in Ireland!

Van Stayen edges out Granjel Cabrera for 2nd. Minard's lead out was so good, he takes 4th, with Summerhill 5th - Vanderbiest coming through for 6th, the first of the sprinters who really lost out in the final positioning moves.

Those who crashed, ended up 4 minutes down. Disastrous day for Bewley, Hagen and Sinkewitz.
