This is the last stage before the hilly stage and it's another chance for Boonen to get closer to Cancellara before it. There are a couple of very steep hills mid-way through so they might weed out a couple of riders.

In the break we have Kruopis (AG2R), a Domina rider who gets dropped very quickly, Lagutin (FloGas), a Belgian rider who gets dropped very quickly, Kozontchuk (Ferrari) and Sieberg (Fed-Ex).

Sieberg took the first sprint ahead of Lagutin and Kozontchuk and he took the 2nd ahead of Kozontchuk and Lagutin. By this point a few riders get dropped like Bonnet, Arroyo, Bos, Niemiec, Furlan and others. Then Sieberg took the final sprint ahead of Lagutin and Kozontchuk. Later many other riders get dropped like Vandborg (8th GC), Laidler (10th), Reus, Grabsch (6th) most of these riders make contact again though.

With 28kms left to race the breakaway is caught.

Lining up for the sprint, we have 2 trains, but only one of them has enough speed to be the decisive on, and it's the train on the nearside. the train is as follows, Pederson-Van Heerden-Simon-Petacchi-Cavendish-Boonen. One of these riders is bound to win.

With 1km to go Van Heerden is still in the lead, what a leadout by Pederson. However, Petacchi and Simon are just behind him and Boonen is just about to come out of Cavendish's wheel, so he isn't celebrating yet.

Petacchi comes around to take the win! Boonen grabs 2nd again, clawing back more time for the GC.
