Penultimate stage and it's another tough days in the mountains, featuring famous climbs like the Col du Galibier (and Télégraphe) concluding with a summit finish on the Col du Granon! 165km in total, this one comes rather short, but should make for some good action then.
Hard to see anyone beating Spilak and Taaramäe, who put up a thrilling battle for yellow so far. Spilak just fought back for the race-lead by the smallest margin of 5 seconds yesterday! It could hardly be more entertaining..
Opposing to yesterday, where he punctured while trying to join the break of the day, Costa (17th in GC, + 20.39) is one of 8 riders in today's escaping group. He's accompanied by:
Montana, Nordhaug, De Weert, Zakarin, Summerhill, Majka and Lutsenko
The group was allowed to establish a gap up to 12 minutes, but as soon as the peloton started chasing on the Galibier, their advantage went quickly down to 2'30" with now 40km remaining!
A few riders attacked the bunch in the meantime, trying to bridge this gap:
Scarponi (18th in GC, + 20.46)
Morton (26th)
Preidler
Sagan (28th)
So Scarponi and Costa with their very own little fight for 17th place in GC.. and of course an attempt to go for the stage! While no one did really challenge for those KoM-sprints today, Zakarin crossed the Galibier first, so jumps onto 3rd in this rankings:
KoM-competition Spilak 54 Taaramäe 42 Zakarin 40
If he holds off the favorites today, there's actually a little chance to take the polka dot on that final road race day..
Still some way to go though: 15km to be precisive and as soon as Scarponi would catch up to the early escapees (as the only one of those mid-stage attackers), he soloes away easily!
The peloton (78 riders) is down by 2'50" at this point, where Scarponi is soon to enter the finishing climb..
..where also the GC-favorites kick off the action with about 8km to go!
Sicard
Taaramäe
Dekker
sanchez Gil
Rujano
Martin
Keinath went first..
Gesink trying to hang on..
Faiers
Pinot
Monsalve
Kunshin
vd Hugenhaben with a 45"-gap disavdantage at this point!
This group of favorites would easily swallow the early escapees 6km before finish, with Scarponi holding on to a minutes-gap.
Martin, Rujano and Sicard with another acceleration now, while Gesink still tries to join this group (now supported by escapee Majka)!
No luck for Martin/Rujano and a few moments later, it's race-leader Spilak on the move! This acceleration looks more promising though. And given his small lead in the GC (and Taaramäe being the better TTler), he may have to put this pressure on the Estonian today!
Taaramäe jumps behind and seems to be the only one of this elite group to be able to bridge this gap to Spilak here! The man in yellow caught up to solo-leader Scarponi in the meantime..
And this new leading trio indeed looks quite promising with now less than 3km remaining... the chasing group with still the same names, even though Sanchez Gil struggles to follow, joining Gesink and his fight to hang on!
2km and Scarponi can't follow Spilak/Taaramäe anymore! Group Dekker/Rujano/Sicard already 49" in arrears, this duo keeps dominating this race with their thrilling fight for yellow!
Final km and it's clear, that this stage will go to either Spilak or Taaramäe... and it may come down to the bonus seconds.. Taaramäe with the slightly better position at Spilak's wheel..
..and slowly moving forward... they are head-to-head with just 100metres to go! As if their fight wouldn't be amazing anyway, they are once again going for a very very close finish here!
It's a photo finish on a mountain stage! Both hadn't much energy left to show a "real" sprint here and so they crossed the line still head-to-head...
..with Taaramäe raising his arms... and yes, he takes out this stage ahead of Spilak! What a thrilling finish, what a close decision and what a great fight between those two! Bonus seconds will do the trick once again..
But first a look at who comes next:
+ 55" Martin, Sicard, Rujano and Dekker
+ 1'20" Gesink
+ 1'30" Keinath
+ 1'44" Scarponi
+ 2'01" Sanchez Gil
+ 2'31" Pinot
+ 2'39" Faiers and Monsalve
So GC's 5th Sanchez Gil again suffered on that final kilometres and may fear to drop out of the Top-5.. kinda expected given his mountain-skills, he once again put up a huge fight nevertheless.
15 riders did not make the time limit today... Viennet and Li as the better TT-specialists amongst them, Ballan and stage-winner Bouhanni as the most prominent names.
And yes, we have a new (old) GC-leader: Taaramäe bounces back from yesterday's "loss" and slips into yellow with just the long ITT to come tomorrow.. 3 seconds ahead of Spilak! 3 damn seconds.. the new yellow is known as the better timetrialer, so Spilak, who tried to attack today, will need to deliver big time tomorrow. Don't count him off, this battle has been crazy so far!
Dekker holds on to his 3rd and looks comfortable there with Rujano as the less strong against the clock.. Sanchez Gil's fight here paid off: he lost a place to Sicard, who moves up to 5th, but goes just down to 6th (with the same time as Martin) and still about a minute ahead of Gesink! This should make for an interesting constellation tomorrow.. Gesink as the better timetrialer will of course aim for the Top-5, which still seems possible.
Keinath once again did well to almost hang on with the very best today, which makes him jump onto 10th in GC.. Pinot as 9th and by far weakest TTler of all serious GC-contenders has yet to defend his Top-10 tomorrow.
