A 204km mountain stage finishing on Mont Bisanne: yap, it's a queen stage. We've seen quite some thrilling action on the hilly stages here, so we can expect some more in the mountains!
Taaramäe took the race-lead thanks to an impressive late move on yesterday's final 2km.. will Spilak bounce back today? And is there anyone, who is able to challenge those two for the overall win here?
The day kicks off with something like a bang, sort of: Costa was one of 10 riders trying to escape early. He might have been the one reason for the group not really being allowed to go for a bigger gap though.. and as soon as he punctured (when still being a part of this group), the remaining 9 riders would finally get the "go" from the bunch. Tough luck for Costa and something that fits "well" into this race for him, unfortunatelly.. anyway, the break of the day:
Dowsett, Summerhill, Levarlet, Stancu, Zakarin, Hivert, Flügel, Kreuziger and Moreno
Again no real GC-threat (Hivert best-placed as 23rd, + 10.36, and best in KoM with 4 points only)...
And so we jump straight into the final 35km, where the peloton would narrow the gap to this escaping group to 2'30" in the meantime.. and we have some early action from the biggest guns here:
Keinath, Taaramäe and Spilak are the first favorites to launch an attack 6km to the mountaintop! Another sign of strengths from Taara/Spilak?
They ain't going "all or nothing" yet though and start shadowing each other with this climb soon to be climbed.. the attacking trio caught up to the escaping group in the meantime and were joined by Rujano, who was the next favorite to attack the bunch.
Just a few seconds back though - and soon to close this gap - there's a next 12-men-group with most of the remaining GC-contenders inside!
Most notable name missing those moves/splits: Faiers (GC's 9th), who enters the downhill with an 1-minute-disadvantage on the now 21-men-leading group!
And he would not manage to bridge this gap until the final climb: 10km of steep slopes! Let's have a look at who's in the mix for the stage today..
Rujano (launching his second attack now)
Taaramäe (following)
Keinath (same here)
Spilak
Sanchez Gil
Dekker
Sicard
Martin and Siutsou
Gesink
Pinot
Monsalve
Bibby
vd Hugenhaben
Kunshin
Scarponi
The remaining early escapees wouldn't hang on for long, there fight is over for today..
Rujano is joined by Taaramäe/Keinath to establish a 22"-gap on a next group with Spilak/Monsalve/Sicard with now 8km to go!
GC's 3rd Sanchez Gil further 11" behind, with Dekker struggling with another 19" of disadvantage at this point! Also Gesink/Martin victims of this high pace early into this climb here!
They do react now (6km to the line), catching up to group Sanchez Gil and now trying to close the gap to the first chasing group Spilak/Sicard!
Back to the front, where Rujano keeps pacing hard and opens up a small gap on Taaramäe 5km before finish! Keinath struggles to follow the yellow..
+ 10" Taaramäe
+ 26" Keinath
+ 50" Spilak/Sicard/Monsalve
+ 1'05" Group Dekker/Gesink/Sanchez/Martin
4km to go and now Spilak launches another attack, trying to bridge the gap to Taaramäe at least! A strong kick.. Rujano only some minor seconds ahead of the man in yellow.
Sicard ain't looking like he would counter Spilak's move, but still holding on to a 20"-gap on the next bigger group.
Spilak would join the leading duo quickly and as soon as he would catch up, him and Taaramäe would sit up for some moments, allowing Rujano to go for another move!
It would also allow the first chasing group to close the gap.. not ideal for Spilak, who now goes for another attack though!
3km to go... GC's 5th Rujano putting some pressure on the GC's Top-4.. and we notice GC's 3rd Sanchez Gil losing contact to the new second group as well! He may fear losing his podium-spot then..
Rujano enters the final km with still a gap on solo-chasing Spilak, who yet managed to maintain another small gap on Taaramäe/Dekker/Sicard!
The chasing group went into pieces again, but it's just some minor gaps.. Gesink/Martin/Keinath dropped Monsalve.. Sanchez Gil already 2'21" down on Rujano!
Just a few hundred metres to go and it's 5 riders seperated by something like 10-16 seconds each:
Rujano... Spilak... Dekker attacking... Taaramäe fighting... Sicard the same!
Rujano holds on to a 10"-gap to take out this tough stage today! A kinda deserved victory, being one of the most aggressive and sensing this one perfect moment, where Taaramäe and Spilak would sit up to shadow each other..
Opposing to Rujano, today's 2nd Spilak does stand a good chance to slip back into yellow today, as his advantage on Taaramäe is quite notable there:
+ 10" Spilak (GC's 2nd + 0.38)
+ 30" Dekker
+ 41" Taaramäe
+ 55" Sicard
+ 1'11" Gesink and Martin.. with Keinath losing additional 11 seconds eventually
+ 1'58" Monsalve
+ 2'26" Sanchez Gil, who's going to lose his 3rd in GC for sure! Still a huge fight from all of those Top-15-finishers today..
+ 6'31" Faiers, who fought his way up solo.. likely to lose this Top-10 though.
And what a close one for yellow, yet again: Spilak slips back into yellow by just 5" on Taaramäe! Those two put up a truly thrilling fight for yellow here. More to come, please!
Dekker jumps onto 3rd (+ 2.24), Rujano 4th (2.41) and Sanchez Gil (3.55) fought hard to defend his Top-5.. Sicard (4.20), Martin (5.09) or Gesink (5.29) will aim to put some more pressure on him tomorrow, while a podium-spot looks out of reach. Anything can happen though, so we better not count anyone of those 8 riders off.
Pinot and Monsalve to round up the Top-10 for now, with a strong Keinath not too far behind. Faiers dropped onto 15th, while vd Hugenhaben bounced back from his loss yesterday to jump onto 13th in GC.. Costa had a quiet day in the bunch after his early puncture, slipping down to 17th in GC.
