The final day of this year Dauphine, what a race, it really has fulfilled expectations. We are not out of the woods or more to the point the mountains, today may be rated hilly but the second category St Bernard de Touvet is not walk in the park. It comes close enough to the end to possibly affect the overall outcome, though many will probably predict a breakaway win.
Spilak seems to have this sewn up with a gutsy performance yesterday which will be well celebrated by sponsors Warner Brothers. Ricardo Ricco is the current King of the Mountains and he should clinch that one. Mondory holds the points lead and may just hold onto that too, though we are back to regular scoring today and a rider like Fothen or Ricco to snatch that one if they went for it!
As many predicted a large break went clear early on sweeping up the two early KOM primes and the sprints. I will get onto the results of them in a moment first the break.
14 men strike out for a bit of glory in France
14 riders and 14 teams represented...
Vaugranard (Jack Wolfskin), Bazajev (Sony), Brandt (Wikipedia), Cohnen (Philips), Solis (Carmuese), Kelly (Vesuvio), Rubiano Chavez (Cafe du Columbia), Mendes (Nespresso), Rangel (Lafarge), Mourey (Festina), Mespoulade (Auber), Matamoros (Lipton), Jaramillo (Starbucks) and Agudelo (La Gazzetta).
The last rider is actually 20th on GC, nearly 11 minutes down though so the break are allowed a bit of breathing space. Brandt (Wikipedia) took the 1st climb, Sebastian Ivars is the Wikipedia team leader and he has done okay limiting his losses on the tough climbs. On the second climb Mourey of Festina takes it.
Mourey - > Solis - > Cohnen
The second places man on this climb is Solis of Carmuese, their team leader Popovich has been having a quiet Dauphine. Their team will be hoping for a big performance from him in the Tour de France as they fear relegation. The two sprints are win by Matamoros and Brandt, but everyones eyes today are on that last climb.
A competition of interest is the teams competition, if this break makes it then those teams with a rider up there will recieve a boost. This is probably why Colom Mas of Energie Diesal is sent off with 80km to go.
Colom Mas launches a bit of a crazy one
With 50km to go though he has done okay here are the gaps begin 1.50 down on the break and two minutes ahead of the peleton. It does look though like the chance of a break winning is high doubtful, Lipton Iced Tea and Warner Brothers are pushing the pace hard.
Warner Brothers and Lipton control things
So the break reach this last climb of the Dauphine, perhaps not as legendary as some of the climbs we have covered but with everyone tired it could well be decisive.
Final bit of climbing for the weary riders
On the bottom ... out of the peleton yesterdays confident stage winner Sella attacks!
One of the world's best climbers attacks this is going to hurt
Contador and Ricco try to respond, but today they are really no match for the Italian who really tested Cunego at his home tour this year.
Sella really hammers here
He reels in and dispatches the breakaway as riders scramble behind, Sella will take the last KOM prime.
Full points at the top for Sella
Behind ultimately its race leader Spilak who has to take the pace making, the tough chase has isolated the team leaders. This means oppurtunity perhaps for GC changes, Spilak crests second with Ricco sealing his KOM win by taking third.
Ricco's third place makes him King Cobra
On the descent Sella keeps pushing on, remember he lost the Giro some say on the Grappa stage which called for a good descent and decent flat skills. Perhaps the Lipton man is wanting to prove a point here with 12km to go he leads by 51 seconds to a group of 4 riders.
Fothen, Popovich, Ricco and Spilak struggling to stay with them
Another 37 seconds back is an 9 man group (Plaza, Caruso, Intxausti, Karpets, Nibali, Pedraza, Contador, Agudelo and Kiserlowski), back another 30 seconds back is Gomez Marchante with the likes of Arroyo, Ivars, Lovkvist and Pozzovivo further back still.
Up front though Marcus Fothen seems to be on a better day, relieved of the pressures of leading the race.
Fothen attacks from his group, he wants to keep Sella off of second spot
Spilak is struggling to respond though he should have enough of a lead to hold Fothen off. Likewise Ricco and Popovich begin to look a bit leggy at this point, sensing this Intxausti leads the attacks from the group behind as things flatten out and begins to undulate.
Intxausti - 2nd best young 'un pushes himself and others up to Fothen group
Plaza, Pedraza and Caruso come with the Spaniard to flip things around a bit. They cannot close to Sella though, who despite fading slightly does indeed prove a point with his second successive stage win.
Sella takes a second stage win and will move up further on GC
Meanwhile behind a group of five come together and duke it out for second, Plaza taking the honours ahead of Pedraza. Fothen takes enough points however to seal the points jersey win.
Plaza takes second on a road stage
Finishing safely in the next group is our yellow jersey Spilak - who wins the Dauphine. Also here is Contador and Nibali who will get a top five but miss out on a podium to pure climber Sella.
Spilak finishes with an eight man group to defend his GC
Biggest loser of the day is Pozzovivo who finishes five minutes down on Sella - he was badly positioned on the 'hilly' climb and tumbles down to 15th on GC, his team moving from top spot on the team rankings to just hold onto 3rd place.
