It’s the final stage of this year’s Critérium du Dauphiné, and just like last year it is a hilly stage.
Phinney
will look to take home the overall win, and no one really looks threatening to his race win. Though, considering it’s a hilly stage, the favourites are
Valverde
Di Maggio
Gesink
The conditions are excellent for this final day of racing in France. Though, many of the riders will come back to the country in July, doing le Tour de France. It’s a short stage, only 127 kilometers long. That should make for some aggressive racing after yesterday’s disappointing performance from the favourites.
As expected with the first few kilometers going uphill before a long descent, there are riders aiming for the breakaway. The seven succeeding making it are
Le Gac
Frohlinger
Heider
W. Jallays
Deignan
Redondo
Palini
A couple of kilometers into the descent and their lead has built to 2’05 back to the peloton.
It takes
Mancuso
20 kilometers chasing solo to catch the seven escapees as he makes it eight 103 kilometers away from home. Their gap has grown to 3’30.
Just like yesterday it is
Wikipedia
doing the early “chase”. Though, they don’t look particularly interested today either, as the gap is up to 4’50 with 86 kilometers to the finish line of this race.
And indeed, no chase is on, why should really
Wikipedia
bother? As the peloton begins to climb the second category climb 45 kilometers away from home they’re 6’20 behind the breakaway, and we’re most likely looking at another breakaway win.
The eight riders co-operate well on the climb, and keeps the gap above six minutes for the whole climb. It’s really wide open who of them can get away with the win today, as they’re pretty evenly matched.
Mancuso
is the best puncheur, but how much will the tough climbs and his long solo chase affect him?
No fight for the mountain points with 40 kilometers to go.
Frohlinger
gets to lead over the top and secures 10 points. The gap back to the peloton is 6’05.
The bunch counts 119 riders over the top, and is still led by
Wikipedia
with no one challenging them. This looks like another rather disappointing stage between the GC riders.
The breakaway starts the final climb of the race with a healthy lead of 5’40 back to the peloton. There are only 26 kilometers left. This hill is a tough one though, and those riders in the breakaway not trusting their sprint should try to do something here.
Martin
gets the ball rolling back in the bunch with a solo attack 6.1 kilometers before the top of the climb, with 25.5 kilometers to the finishing line.
Alarcon
Valverde
Gesink
Sicard
Van Den Broeck
Spilak
are right after him. Though,
Wikipedia
still have several riders on the front pushing the pace.
And indeed, they’re going absolutely nowhere! It only makes the same seven riders launch again, this time with
Alarcon
as the initiator.
Phinney
moves as
Spilak
sits down! That’s a surprising move from the race leader, considering he still has several team mates in the peloton. But maybe he senses weakness at the second placed rider in the overall standing?
But no,
Spilak
simply reeled them all back. But now, as
Wikipedia
once again comes to the front,
Martin
Sicard
Gesink
Contador
Alarcon
Van Den Broeck
Spilak
launch another attack!
The favourites are thundering up the climb, as the gap up to the breakaway is only two minutes with 3.3 kilometers left to climb for the favourites!
Phinney
seems to believe
Mai
Pinot
are empty, as he now attacks together with
De la Fuente, trying to bridge to the previous attackers!
Critical moment for race leader
Phinney!
3.1 kilometers from the top of the climb he sits down with
Keinath
on his rear wheel, and sees the other favourites flying up the road!
It means that with 2700 meters left to climb seven riders have pulled a gap of 1’05 back to the race leader! The seven riders are
Gesink
Contador
Martin
Sicard
Alarcon
Spilak
Van Den Broeck
Most of them doesn’t look interested in extending their gap though, as they’re thirsty and calls for water from the neutral service motor bike!
Contador
doesn’t think highly of such a thing, and attacks again 2.2 kilometers from the top of the climb as the gap down to
Phinney
quickly came down to 40 seconds.
Spilak
can’t afford to let the Spaniard go, and catches him 400 meters before the top of the climb. And watch this, they have caught the breakaway as well! That is proof of some crazy climbing from the overall contenders! Big question is what happens now, as they’re a total of 14 riders, with
W. Jallays
immediately dropped.
Contador
leads them into the descent, though, it was
Palini
managing to hold on for the 16 mountain points on offer. The riders in here are
Contador
Frohlinger
Spilak
Heider
Palini
Deignan
Mancuso
Redondo
Gesink
Le Gac
Alarcon
Martin
Van Den Broec
Sicard
Phinney
is in big difficulties, but the front of the race has slowed down the last 500 meters, as he sees the leading group only 30 seconds ahead of him over the top.
Then comes
Keinath
W. Jallays
De la Fuente
another 20 seconds behind the American race leader.
Another minute behind follow
Valverde
Eastman
Valls
You must feel a bit sorry for Valverde. All his early attacking made him not able to follow what’s looking like the decisive move.
Phinney
takes every risk possible to take on this tricky descent as he comes closer. 15 kilometers from the line he’s only 20 seconds behind!
And there it is, the race leader is back in contention for the stage win! Brilliant descending skills sees
Phinney
at the back of the lead group, now counting 15 riders.
The addition of the race leader sees this group basically stops racing on the descent! They’re going slow under the five kilometers to go kite. But the closest chasers are still 50 seconds behind. That will be
Keinath
De la Fuente
who has dropped
W. Jallays
2.6 kilometers to go and the final sprint of this year’s Critérium du Dauphiné opens up! It’s
Alarcon
leading out with
Phinney
perfectly placed behind him. Then it’s
Palini
Sicard
Mancuso
Martin
Redondo
Van Den Broeck
Gesink
Spilak
following close.
Phinney
makes his move 900 meters before the finishing line, and he’s looking good! He found himself more than a minute down on the other riders in this group on the climb, now he’s in the perfect position for his third stage win this Dauphiné!
400 meters to go and
Spilak
Van Den Broeck
Martin
all look like they want to have a say about the stage win, but they’re struggling to go faster than the American!
Phinney
wins it! Thanks to his perfect positioning before the sprint started he got a gap to the other contenders in this sprint that he never let go.
Spilak
is a clear second on the stage, which also sees him take second in the overall standing.
Van Den Broeck
is an equal clear third and takes the last podium spot today. He will also be rewarded with fourth place in the GC after a nice week of racing by him here in France.
Martin
Gesink
Redondo
Sicard
Heider
Palini
Frohlinger
Deignan
Mancuso
follow then in the group sprinting for the win, though, none of them had a real chance at the podium.
De la Fuente
Keinath
sprints home about 1’20 behind the American stage and race winner.
Here’s a surprise!
Valls
attacked on the downhill and got a nice gap back to Valverde. He comes home about 2’30 behind Phinney, with
W. Jallays
following just behind.
Eastman
Valverde
sprints home around 3’30 slower than the lead group. It’s a shame for the Spaniard, who will slip down the overall ranking.
