This mountain stage to begin the race is key, the chances are you need to win this stage, or at least be close, to have any hope in GC. Despite the early climbs, the stage winner is also very likely to take the KoM jersey
A break of 15 tried to get away, they were caught, so a break of 9 went instead
Martino, Stalder, Ortega, Guldhammer, Sorensen, Balck, Zirbel, Bogdan and Moreno
Jimmi Sorensen won the first sprint, but along with Balck was dropped by the time Bogdan won the first KoM
Ortega ripped the group apart at the next climb though. Only Guldhammer and Moreno kept with him, although Bogdan regained contact in the descent
Penultimate climb, and Pirelli are driving the peloton - Hesjedal, Basso, Santaromita and Tiralongo
At the top of this climb, Mauricio Ortega is now alone - the rest of the break is now dropped for good
With 40km to go, he leads the peloton by 4 minutes
Descent and flat follows - plus an intermediate sprint, and now Ortega is onto the final climb, 10km to go
Guldhammer, Bogdan and Moreno are caught as the peloton reach this point - Ortega still leads by 2'45
That gap remains 2km later. Pirelli are no longer making an impact so Cadel Evans attacks
Rohregger, Lloret, Ochoa Quintero, Zubeldia, Paulinho, Stetina and then Taaramae respond
5km to go for Ortega
Evans trails by 1'24
All the previously mentioned counterattackers are in the group behind Evans - although Stetina and Taaramae are pushing on - plus Cobo is there aswell
And finally, Ricco and Serpa attack
Ortega is still going well. 1 minute ahead of Evans with 3.3km to go
Taaramae is 30 seconds behind Evans
Another 30 seconds to Ricco, Serpa and Stetina - with the other attacks a little gapped
Into the final 2km, Taaramae is closing in on Evans. Theyre both closing in on Ortega
Ortega enters the final kilometre - still holding on - 15 seconds
Then comes Taaramae, and then Ricco, Serpa and Stetina - there doesnt seem to be a way back for them now
500 metres to go, Evans makes contact with Ortega's back wheel
Evans was Ortega's teammate last year at Petronas, but no time for sentiment now, Evans needs every second and bonus second possible as Taaramae - a strong time trialer - closes in
Photo finish!
Mauricio Ortega has taken the stage! Holding on from the breakaway, you have to say it was deserved
Taaramae comes so close, but loses 8 seconds on the line in taking 3rd
Ricco, Serpa and Stetina finish at 34 seconds
Cobo, Peterson, Alarcon, Zubeldia and Ochoa Quintero are at 56 seconds
