Sunny and warm, what more could you ask for? Should be a great opening day of the Benelux Challenge. The favourites for today's opening 173km flat stage are Drapac, Farrar, and Vanderaerden.
Let's head down to the start line as we are about to get underway!
There goes the gun! We are off! Will be interesting to see who tries to get into the morning breakaway early with a category 4 climb 13kms into today's route.
A group of 4 attacks 6kms into the stage:
Sanikwathi
Stuyven,
Carapaz
Mayho.
The peloton is unhappy with that group and quickly pulls them back.
But the 4 of them go again, this time joined by Kulppi and Mundle.
A good battle for the points at the top with Stuyven taking the max 5 over Sanikwathi (3) and Mayho (1).
Shortly after everyone up front is caught expect for Stuyven and Mayho,
the peloton is finally starting to ease up a bit, is this our breakaway of the day?
I would say so. 130kms to go, gap at 3'30" and growing.
108kms to go at the 2nd cat. 4 climb. Stuyven easily beats Mayho.
Bajadali takes the single point left out of the peloton.
Approaching the final categorized climb today when... disaster strikes and our cameras missed it. Canadian Veilleux crashes with 91kms to go. He looks okay, but you never know. He does rejoin the peloton after 15kms of chasing.
Back up front, Stuyven goes 3 for 3 today on the climbs and secures the king of the mountains jersey for tomorrow. However, 79kms to go and the peloton is 3 minutes behind them.
Stuyven takes the only sprint point today as well with 35kms to go.
Surprisingly, Farrar and Drapac sprint for the 3rd place when the peloton rolls through. The American gets it, but was it really worth the 2 sprint points and 2 bonus seconds?
Stuyven has had enough of Mayho as he attacks away with 24kms to go. It's highly unlikely he will make it to the finish on this solo attack with the peloton closing the gap to under 2 minutes but you have to applaud his effort at least.
In a day that has seen multiple teams share the pace-making on the front it's Azteca - NBCSN, Team Nordeus, and Bank of Ireland – Irish Cycling do all the work down the stretch. They pick up Mayho with 14kms to go and set their sights on Stuyven a minute up the road.
Chaos at the back of the race! 9 riders go down! No time to recap, but from our vantage point there are no big names on the pavement, the peloton is charging fast towards the finish line.
Exactly 10kms to go and Stuyven is caught. He will at least get the KoM jersey to wear tomorrow for his effort.
5kms to go and no sprint trains have formed, it's all Bank of Ireland – Irish Cycling occupying the front of the race.
Seconds later 3 trains emerge!
Millan Duque Farrar Barclay Uugunbayar Harrison Alaphilippe Sweeting Drapac Stankovic Sutton Bole
Behind them deciding on which train to follow are:
Iglinski
Wyss
Selander
Velits
Aulas
Averin
Vitoria
Farrar is looking at a clean run up with Duque leading him out with 1.8kms to go while the Nordeus and Bank of Ireland trains sort of combine and mix.
With the mix-up on the left side of the road Harrison decides to go alone leaving his captain Drapac behind. Farrar has to be loving what he sees. The only man he should be worried about now is Uugunbayar on his wheel.
Under the banner, Harrison is putting up a strong fight but Farrar is just waiting to make his move and has dropped Uugunbayar off his wheel. Surely, he has this in the bag.
Behind Farrar it's Stankovic, fading Uugunbayar, Alaphilippe,
Bole, and finally Drapac.
Farrar kicks but is somehow struggling to find speed, the line is in sight.
Farrar literally has nothing left in his tank...
But it's Farrar's teammate Leonardo Duque that saves the day and gets a very surprising win over Harrison and charging Bole who takes 3rd.
The rest of the top 10 rounds out to a disappointing 4th for Farrar, 5th
Sutton, 6th Stankovic, 7th Alaphilippe, 8th Sweeting, 9th late surging Iglinkski, and 10th Millan.
Now sorting through all the riders coming in after the peloton and there are a few surprising names to lose time. Most due to laziness, others dues to being held up by crashes. The unlucky ones are:
Kolobnev
Duggan
Bugge
Ostergaard
Matzka
And a few other small names. Also worth noting Chan abandoned the race 1.4kms away from the finish line for no apparent reason.
Check the results below for the full list of cyclists to lose time. Heartbreaking for a few teams to have their leaders lose time by being careless on a simple flat stage. But, that's cycling. You win some, you lose some.
