Going into the final stage, Ginanni holds a 34 seconds lead to Bazajev. With the stage being flat, and a maximum of 26 boni seconds on offer, you'd think he's save. But... the stage is long and there is wind; anything can happen!
Into the stage, the first attack (by Astarloza) is the good one right away. He get's Vantornout, Wyss, Martin, Echarri, Timofeev and Turano with him. Vespa control the pack.
With three men they make sure the lead doesn't grow over 10 minutes. But that doesn't make 9'30 a gap that can easily be closed, and with Martin and Astarloza both at just 2'00, they migth want to start increasing their pace.
And so they do, with a little help from other teams. At the intermediate sprint, the gap is down to just 3'40, with still 60km left. As Astarloza wins the sprint, Turano and Wyss where just getting a drink and are gapped - but they return right after the sprint.
With 30km left, all riders are caugth. Time enough for the sprinters get prepare themselves.
Or for an attacker to take this opportunity?
But no... everybody seems to have settled for this GC.
All sprinters line up but... van Heerden - first in the line - is following Ben Nasser? There isn't a sprinters train, although Gaywood is with Kennaugh (in the green jersey) a little further back. Might they repeat there 'coupe' from stage one again in this final stage?
4km left and now Ljungblad is putting a very high pace. Gaywood tried to get his wheel with Kennaugh and van Heerden right on his tail, as Kristoff has to let a gap as well with Forster on his wheel.
3km: Gaywood has caugth up, Kristoff still leads most other sprinters on a small gap. If Gaywood doesnt fail it'll be between Kennaugh and van Heerden!
2km: The sprint is on now! Poulhies manages to bridge the gap as Forster launches his sprint, while Perez Arrieta is coming fast on the left as well with Renshaw in his wheel. Kennaugh and van Heerden can't wait any longer!
But they do! Here are Perez Arrieta, Renshaw and Casper as van Heerden has finally started his sprint as well.
With van Heerden, Ljungblad and Perez Arrieta neck on neck going into the final kilometer, Kennaugh and Ventoso are now making their moves as well, going around on the left side.
Kennaugh is closing in on Perez Arrieta as Ljungblad and van Heerden completely failed. Renshaw is approching Perez Arrieta wheel with Forster following him, and Bongiorno is coming up now too, but it's seems too late for them; it's a two men race.
Perez Arrieta to save Santanders week - or Kennaugh to finsih the race how he started it?
It's Kennaugh!!! Perez Arrieta started his sprint very early and couldnt keep it up in the end, since even Ventoso managed to pass him. Santander 2nd and 3rd - Ouch!
Ginanni is brought in safely by Napolitano - he wins the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque 2010!
