We’re kicking off in France with the shortest stage. It’s perfectly suited to the sprinters since it’s nearly completely flat, so it may not be a suprize there’s enough sprinters to contest it; Freire, Napolitano, Casper, Duque, van Heerden, Ventoso, Granjel Cabreira and Kennaugh are just some of them.
With a hill stage later on, the puncheurs look to be the favourites for the overall GC. There’s plenty of them too, but we will look into that when their stage comes.
So, on to todays stage. Race conditions are quite good, except maybe for a bit of wind.
Very early on, there are tons of attacks. Attacks means chases, and chases plus wind equals… splits!
A small groupe gapped the pack in Chase of the attackers, only containing most sprinters plus domestiques.
As the attacker settle in a groupe, there’s now a groupe in the back seen to be gapped as well. 4 Groupes, but all close to eachother, and with a corner coming up, the wind direction will change. Only 15km done.
And with a changing wind, all groupes seem to join up again, as Perez Arriete comes just too late to take the sprint, as attacker Vantornout wins it.
After the sprint though, there’s still 8 riders behind the peloton, of which 5 riders from Team Ultimate! That must be the worst possible start to a race.
At the first KOM sprint (won by van Ooien in front of Wyss) the pack has finally setteld.
Rwaching the next KOM sprint though, the attackers still havent joined eachother with Wyss taking the points now. The pack is 4’30 behind.
It’s only at the sprint a third rider (Stoltz) manages to join up with van Ooien and Wyss. Behind them there are Jaksche, Duran, Kuchinski, Ghyselinck, Vingerling, Turan, Ratto, Downing, Higgerson and Vantornout spread over 2 groupes and 2 soloists.
And it’s status quo as van Ooien secures the KOM jersey, except they only have 3’30 left to the pack: the sprinters feel like sprinting today!
5km left; the sprinters are having a little trouble getting up front, as we can only see one train.
This changed at the 3km Point though, as Galdos leads Bongiorno – Forster – Renshaw – Sutton. Next tot hem Are Gaywood – Kennaugh – Westling and a little further back on the left side there’s Grillo with Bazavjev. All other sprinters are up front as well, but not in a good train!
And with 2km Gaywood proves a train is the best way to get up front, as he leads Kanaugh to the perfect position. Duque is already coming u pon the left, as is Ventoso.
When Kennaugh has started his sprint, only van Heerden can challenge him on the other side of the road, while Westling is still on the Brits wheel.
But more then sitting in the Wheel he can’t do, and Kennaugh takes the win by just going flat out and not looking back, while teammate Gaywood is already cheering in the background; a nice piece of teamwork!
While all eyes where focused on the sprint, half the Lego team comes in 3 minutes behind the pack. It seems like Koldo Gil had a puncture, and already lost the GC now.
