1. Start race - Pause (p) and hit 0 to select all your riders - adjust effort to 85% and relay to ask them to come forward in front of the peloton - once they are up front - Hit the maintain position button - with your Leader adjust him to 70% once in front of the peloton (This will save him energy) - the team mates can stay at 85% maintain position.
2. Protect your Leader with someone who is good at the terrain you are riding in - Normally a mountain guy in the mountains.
3. Stay at 70% and maintain position till the middle of the race - then you up it to 75% untill the last third about 30-40KM to go.
4. Last 30-40km you adjust effort to 85% and maintain position - Protect your leader with your best climb team mate
WATER Intervals - KM to go - 160 - 120 - 80 - 40 Get someone to fetch water at these times - never up a mountain though.
5. Last mountain lets say its 20km long - put leader on 70% and dot - doesn't matter if you lose touch with the group of the best riders - this is a system - so 70% till you reach 10km to go then you adjust effort to 75% at this point your team mate protection is close to die on you - With 5km to go you adjust again this time you up the effort to 85% - you should now be competing against the best - with 3.3km to go (sometimes 4km) you eat the gel and wait for it to be activated in yellow - at 1.3km to go you up the effort to 93% untill 500meters to go where you adjust to 99% and sprint for glory.
This system makes me win a lot of Mountain finishes against the best even if I get dropped momentarily and it looks like I'm going to lose a lot of time. This example was ofcourse a long mountain finish - but simularly you can apply the same strategy for shorter mountains - at 10km to go I always go 75% before that happens 70%.
If the mountain is less steep in the grades between 5-7.5 % I eat the gel at 4km to go and around 2km to go I adjust effort to 93% when the gel been activated and turned yellow - when the gel is used up I sprint.
