Giro di Lombardia
The race will post sometime over the weekend although not sure when but figured I would get this up since Fab has teed up the points situation here
The Giro di Lombardia marks the end of the pro tour season, not just symbolically but literally in the mangame. This year the riders get a new route that goes from Varese to Bergamo, a little longer then last year at 255k but an easier run in. While last year featured the Civigio (4.3k at 9.8%) and San Fermo della Bataglia climbs (2.5k at 7.7%) both in the last few kilometers this year the last major climb (Forcella di Berbeno, 8.8k at 4.6%) peaks about 20 from the end and then the riders have just one more small climb, Bergamo Alta (1.3k at 9%) before the finish.
Last year Herklotz took the win, his first and the first by a grand tour winner since Spilak in 2017. The previous few years were won by puncheurs in Sagan and Yates. Neither is back but 2020 winner Lopez is, he is a rider who will be disappointed if he ends his career with only 1 win in this race.
The first set of riders we look at are the puncheurs and the hybrids plus the Herklotz, a special class of one. Many of these riders will be hoping the easier parcours is in their favor. Skujins will try to lead Tinkoff to PT title glory but he is one of the weakest climbers on the list.
More likely candidates for the win are Herklotz and Lopez. Areruya is the closest to these two but there are other strong all-rounders on the startlist, names like Ardila, Higuita, Formolo and Valter. The latter two were 5th and 3rd last year. Ardilla isn’t known for his strong secondaries which could handicap him in a 250k race.
If the course does ride a lot easier then Vansevenant seems like a great candidate, he has been effective on pretty much every terrain he has ridden this year.
Rider | MT | HI | RS | ST | AC | Lopez | 80 | 84 | 74 | 76 | 78 | Gidich | 76 | 83 | 77 | 78 | 75 | Mohoric | 71 | 83 | 72 | 78 | 77 | De Bie | 70 | 83 | 75 | 76 | 74 | Skujins | 69 | 82 | 76 | 79 | 75 | Herklotz | 84 | 81 | 80 | 79 | 76 | Areruya | 81 | 81 | 78 | 76 | 76 | Ardila | 81 | 80 | 70 | 69 | 75 | Higuita | 79 | 80 | 78 | 76 | 75 | Formolo | 79 | 80 | 76 | 76 | 71 | Valter | 78 | 80 | 75 | 76 | 78 | Aranburu | 77 | 80 | 79 | 70 | 71 | Vansevenant | 74 | 80 | 78 | 79 | 80 | Gesbert | 74 | 80 | 78 | 80 | 73 | Romo | 72 | 80 | 76 | 78 | 71 |
The second group of contenders is the climbers. Tour de France winner Kudus carries the hopes of Moser to avoid relegation on his back and is the best pure climber in the race. At the other end of the PT table Gazelle have gone for Dombrowsk ahead of Lutsenko to carry their hopes. Tinkoff have covered their bases with Sivakov joining Skujins on the startlist. On this list Hirt, 2nd, and Latour, 4th, were strong last year. Although the Czech rider is not as young as he was. Amezawa (7th last year) gives MOL a really strong 1-2 punch with Ardila and he doesn’t suffer the same weaknesses as the Colombian.
Rider | MT | HI | RS | ST | AC | Kudus | 85 | 78 | 77 | 79 | 70 | Dombrowski | 83 | 74 | 77 | 79 | 74 | Haig | 83 | 74 | 75 | 76 | 73 | Latour | 81 | 75 | 78 | 80 | 74 | Galta | 81 | 73 | 79 | 78 | 66 | Sivakov | 81 | 72 | 77 | 79 | 69 | Shikai | 81 | 71 | 76 | 74 | 67 | Amezawa | 80 | 77 | 78 | 76 | 75 | Warchol | 80 | 74 | 77 | 76 | 70 | Hirt | 80 | 73 | 78 | 76 | 75 | Inkelaar | 80 | 70 | 76 | 75 | 74 |
Popo4ever are the only wild card here, so 23 teams take to the start.

Hmm, I seem to have messed up and instead of puncheurs, I have been sending all of my sprinters here. Wish me luck

Thanks for the preview! Think the startlist may be the wrong image though.
Getting a little too optimistic now looking at the startlist. Last year climbers did very well, so I feel like we should be able to keep a 74 point gap to cycleYorkshire with Aranburu + Galta vs. Romo. But anything can happen with the monument points scale allowing for a wide range of outcomes. Xero will crush us, but it feels like we could end up anywhere from 9th-11th based on this one final race. Let's go team!
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Nothing else we can do, but chill and see what happens.

Quite sure we aren't in Lombardia, so the startlist is probably wrong.

Alright, here we go! The race that decides it all.
All our eggs are in the climbing basket. Those three mountains before the final will have to shed the pure puncheurs. If that happens, Dombrowski and the climbing team have a good chance of outscoring Tinkoff. But if the pace over the mountains is low and Skujins hangs on, we're most likely in trouble.
Curious to analyse Tinkoff's climbing depth. Will need to wait for the fixed startlist to see that.

Was not expecting this not to be a crucial race for us in the relegation battle. But I'm happy there's no big pressure on Formolo to deliver though we do need a top 10 for our season goals.

The race looks quite a bit easier in the final 50km or so than last year, so our sponsors thought it'd be a good idea to make this a Top 10 goal... Achieving this will solely depend on Schmid, and looking at recent results and at the startlist, I guess it's going to be almost impossible. Sure, he's stronger on long climbs than many other puncheurs, but with all of those top-level climbers present, it'll be tough...
Looking forward to see how it goes, fortunately "just" the sponsor goal at stake for us. Could still make or break our 2025 season, though, as we won't be able to do much during transfers if we fail that goal as well ^^
Thanks for the preview!

Sorry about the startlist, forgot I hadn't actually generated it. Have put a simple list up for now. Will add the bib numbers when I have it.

Back to the PCT, it seems. Some mistakes from the management, but will learn from this... I hope. Congrats for the winner and for Gazelle. Thanks for the report, was very detailed and interesting! |

Another veeery close monument miss regarding the win by Valter. And this one I really felt he had. Kind of heartbreak to see him caught on the line, as it felt like he was the one making his and Quita's attack stick, and then when he even came back on Quita in the sprint, I really thought it was meant to be. Guess we next season have to go top 3 in all possible monuments
Congratulations on the monument, jandal. Another one!
And what a title fight that was, thank you for your extensive coverage of it, UU. That was definitely a nailbiter to follow. Big congratulations, DD. Will write more in the final rankings thread |

First of all, huge thanks for the great report to UU. As you know, I love stats - and there were soooo many of them, no clue how you managed to gather all of them in a reasonable amount of time!
And it was a great summary both of the live action and the title fight, thanks for that as well!
Congrats to jandal on the 2nd monument win of the year, pretty extraordinary stuff for a newly promoted team - and even more so given that both winners were already on your PCT roster!
Congrats also to Gazelle on another PT title! The route change definitely didn't play in Dombrowski's favour, being clearly more puncheur friendly than in 2023 (which I was obviously hoping for). But your amazing depth was still enough to secure the title.
Key race for you in my opinion: Lutsenko's outstanding Giro performance! It was quite a risk to send him there, but it fully paid off! He may have been overtaken in pure puncheur races by the likes of Areruya, Valter or Vansevenant - but his great show in the Giro brought you these much-needed points!
For my own team, definitely an awesome end to the season. We were aggressive all day long, just like I love to see it. First Stehli in the break (where was he during the rest of the year?). Then Schmid, followed by Errazkin. OK, maybe he could've taken even more than 5th without spending the energy in that early attack, but Schmid did an awesome job in the finale! Almost a podium - but I guess we need to keep some room for improvement for next year (unlike Xero ). And it's still our best monument result by far this year - not only the first Top 10, but even a Top 5! Well done to Mauro to secure at least this sponsor goal, after the ToNE blunder. This could be a crucial result for next year's budget!
And last but not least, congrats to Oxxo for finally staying up, after having so much bad luck this year. I'd definitely have loved to see Kudus mounting a proper challenge, but the route didn't suit him, either. So it's weird to see the TdF winner and the Vuelta points winner go down, but yeah, shit happens...
Thanks again for the massive report, and see you all next year!

Thanks for the amazing report, UU. Loved the stats and the detailed updates of the PT title situation. Reading that was very immersive and tense!
Gradually it dawned on me that the mountains were not inflicting any casualties at all and that most likely MO was going to be way less of a factor than in previous editions of Lombardy (or even the recent Japan Cup).
This turned us from a strong team with a clear leader (MO values 83, 80, 79, 77, 76, 74, 74, 73) into a leaderless blob of mediocre puncheurs (HI values 76, 76, 76, 76, 74, 74, 73, 73). Worrying.
But the blob delivered. As the peloton split and mended throughout the race, we always had one or two riders at the front and another bunch staying close. Tinkoff never managed to outnumber us. Especially Carboni was doing a great job marking them.
Going into the final sprint it was clear that we were going to outscore Tinkoff in terms of depth and that the only thing that could win the title for them was Skujins getting in or near the top 5 and Carboni at least ten places lower.
Under the 1km banner this was still possible, with Skujins sitting in a good second row position. But about 500 meters later it was clear that he and Carboni were the slowest sprinters in the group. The PT title being decided in the last km of the last race is pretty damn cool.
Congrats jandal on another big win! And also massive result for King Power.
Got to go sleep. Will comment on the title in the final ranking update thread tomorrow.

Damn, what a report Ulrich!
Fitting report for a classic PT title and relegation decider! The race itself was also exciting, with yet another great win for Areruya and jandal

Awesome report UU!
For us it was a drama free race as I hoped. Hoelgaard in 23rd is a nice end to what was a solid season for him.
Congrats to Xero, Areruya is too good sometimes

Huge report with all the spoilers and what if and where are they now!
Liked it a lot. In especially the Bobridge part obviously.
Areruya takes the favourite win here, whereas Herklotz underperformed.
Vansevenant in 8th is fine. Obviously always hoping for more, but not many riders attempt a 65 km solo attack and still keep up till the finale to sprint for points. |
