Balkans International - Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0049%20%282%29.png

Welcome to stage 4 of the Balkans International and if you couldn't guess by now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya are the big favourites for the day but with a flat finish today potential for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Lagane to be involved at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0050.png

It was a very early Cat 4 climb today, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna was aware of that and grabbed second behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Putti to put him even closer to the KOM lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0052.png

And by climb 2 of the day we have our break and we have a new virtual KOM leader as once again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna wins the sprint, the unpredictable nature of the KOM jersey had given some excitement on the first few day with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez dominating the actual stages but even this competition is turning into a one man show now.

The break today consist of:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McCarthy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rojas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Banzer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Vermaerke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png De Vos
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Zumer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Juntunen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Putti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0055.png

We skip forward to 65km to go and another Cat 4 climb win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png De Vos to further boost his lead.

The peloton has given the break no room today with only a 2"15 lead currently as we have to the biggest climb of the tour.

Goli VRH with 15km @ 6.1% this should be a selective climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0057.png

But behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Stöckli is a good climber on the front but the peloton practically crawl up the climb as the gap to the break grows to 3"20 this won't be the GC difference today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0058.png

4 have broken clear in the break in front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Zumer ,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Banzer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png De Vos and of course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna who grabs another 16pts at the top of the Category 1 climb. He leads De Vos by 22 points in that competition now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0060.png

And just to confirm the peloton did indeed set the same pace the whole way up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Quita leads over the 130 strong pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0061.png

Final categorized climb of the day and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Banzer would go over first not after the points but attacking for the win pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png De Vos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McKenna follow but the gap is only "45 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0062.png

10km to go and they are caught as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney launches a big attack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates go with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0063.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Cemazar and the whole Puma team close it because... well I don't really know why defending pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Zimmermann top 20 on GC?! or they saw pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez in Yellow and assumed it must be Herklotz. either way these 3 are getting no gap here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0064.png

The 3 leaders soon sit up and give a big stare to the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png train as it comes by.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0065.png

The pace slows and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Gidich slowly rides off the front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin senses the danger and attacks across to him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0066.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates makes a huge effort to try and bridge across while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Gesbert just rides his wheel across we are inside 5km to go and the gap is starting to open, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski is the latest to go off the front of the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0067.png

And now another 6 have gone pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Phodingam are the latest to jump off the front but there 45 seconds of our leading 4 and we could have some gaps today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0069.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Gidich has yet to come off the front of the bunch and he keeps on powering under the 1km to go sign. Theres no change in the order as we start the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0070.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Gesbert hadn't used all his energy though he surfed the wheels to get into the break and as soon as the sprint is launched he powers away and opens a gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0071.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Gesbert wins by miles in the sprint! The organisers even give him a 7 second time gap to go with his stage win and bonus seconds he could threaten pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez for the lead here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0072.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin just gets pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Gidich on the line for 2nd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates is 4th. These 3 would also be given 9 seconds time gap over the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/PCM0073.png
3

Which is headed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez who heads what the organisers are calling a 130 man group as all the gaps come to together in the sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Meintjes is 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk in 7th . pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann is 8th then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton 10th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya had a huge sprint to bring the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez group back to being on the same time at the end.

Which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lopez now leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Gesbert by only 18 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya is 3rd on 24 seconds with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Gidich up to 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates in 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin jumps a few position into 12th.
