Welcome to stage 4 of the Balkans International and if you couldn't guess by now Lopez and Areruya are the big favourites for the day but with a flat finish today potential for Ackermann and Lagane to be involved at the end.
It was a very early Cat 4 climb today, but McKenna was aware of that and grabbed second behind Putti to put him even closer to the KOM lead.
And by climb 2 of the day we have our break and we have a new virtual KOM leader as once again McKenna wins the sprint, the unpredictable nature of the KOM jersey had given some excitement on the first few day with Lopez dominating the actual stages but even this competition is turning into a one man show now.
The break today consist of:
McCarthy
Rojas
McKenna
Banzer
Vermaerke
De Vos
Zumer
Juntunen
Putti
Medvedev
Van Den Berg
We skip forward to 65km to go and another Cat 4 climb win for McKenna over De Vos to further boost his lead.
The peloton has given the break no room today with only a 2"15 lead currently as we have to the biggest climb of the tour.
Goli VRH with 15km @ 6.1% this should be a selective climb
But behind Stöckli is a good climber on the front but the peloton practically crawl up the climb as the gap to the break grows to 3"20 this won't be the GC difference today.
4 have broken clear in the break in front Zumer , Banzer, De Vos and of course McKenna who grabs another 16pts at the top of the Category 1 climb. He leads De Vos by 22 points in that competition now.
And just to confirm the peloton did indeed set the same pace the whole way up Quita leads over the 130 strong pack.
Final categorized climb of the day and Banzer would go over first not after the points but attacking for the win De Vos and McKenna follow but the gap is only "45 seconds.
10km to go and they are caught as Phinney launches a big attack Areruya and Yates go with him.
Cemazar and the whole Puma team close it because... well I don't really know why defending Zimmermann top 20 on GC?! or they saw Lopez in Yellow and assumed it must be Herklotz. either way these 3 are getting no gap here.
The 3 leaders soon sit up and give a big stare to the train as it comes by.
The pace slows and Gidich slowly rides off the front Champoussin senses the danger and attacks across to him
Yates makes a huge effort to try and bridge across while Gesbert just rides his wheel across we are inside 5km to go and the gap is starting to open, Kwiatkowski is the latest to go off the front of the bunch.
And now another 6 have gone Lopez, Van Niekerk, Meintjes, Morton, Buchmann and Phodingam are the latest to jump off the front but there 45 seconds of our leading 4 and we could have some gaps today
Gidich has yet to come off the front of the bunch and he keeps on powering under the 1km to go sign. Theres no change in the order as we start the sprint.
Gesbert hadn't used all his energy though he surfed the wheels to get into the break and as soon as the sprint is launched he powers away and opens a gap!
Gesbert wins by miles in the sprint! The organisers even give him a 7 second time gap to go with his stage win and bonus seconds he could threaten Lopez for the lead here.
Champoussin just gets Gidich on the line for 2nd Yates is 4th. These 3 would also be given 9 seconds time gap over the next group.
3
Which is headed by Lopez who heads what the organisers are calling a 130 man group as all the gaps come to together in the sprint Meintjes is 6th, Van Niekerk in 7th . Buchmann is 8th then Kwiatkowski and Morton 10th. Areruya had a huge sprint to bring the Lopez group back to being on the same time at the end.
Which means Lopez now leads Gesbert by only 18 seconds, Areruya is 3rd on 24 seconds with Gidich up to 4th and Yates in 5th. Champoussin jumps a few position into 12th.
